[BONUS] I am still alive - issue 203 - 18th December, 2022

I Am Still Alive

I’ve been asked in a lot of different contexts whether I studied writing at university. The thing is, I did and I didn’t. There was no Bachelor of Creative Writing at my university when I attended it, there was however a Bachelor of Writing, but in order to get the credits to graduate with that degree I would have had to do more classes on journalism and various other topics I had no interest in. So instead, I did a Bachelor of Communication, largely because I’m a huge fuck-up and as a degree it was broad enough that a lot of classes I’d already done would count toward it. So, as well as a large focus on writing, I also did classes on film and some on digital media, digital art, and visual art (as well as a marketing class that I flunked because I stopped going after the cut-off date where you could pull out of the class. (See above RE: fuck-up.)

For my main project in that visual art class, I put together a series of photographs of my eyeball when I woke up. At the time I was working at a supermarket, supporting myself through uni by stocking shelves and what-not. Most of my shifts started at 5am, sorting out the shelf “facing” before the store opened at 8am. Needless to say, the eyes featured in my photos were often red and bleary – one morning I wasn’t even able to open it properly for the photo.

It was an anti-capitalist piece of art, obviously (I have been on my bullshit for a very long time), commenting on what we are forced to do to our bodies and lives by a system that relies on our exhaustion for its endless growth1.

nothing here but quantum pollution

issue 202 - 11th December, 2022

CJW: Bit of an odd one this issue as Dan is off (COVID has taken another NH scalp), and I'm in the process of figuring out how I want to relate with/through this newsletter. Last fortnight's retrospective made me realise that I wasn't enjoying my more recent approach to newslettering - reading too much because I felt I had to, regardless of whether I wanted to or not. Covering topics that are important but don't actually spark interest in me.

CJW: Welcome welcome. To go along with the 200th issue historical recap we decided to ask newsletter OG Austin to come back for this issue to share some bits and pieces. It’s an eclectic one, and I’m sure everyone will find something here to spark the ol’ neurons.

[BONUS] nothing here but a double-century

issue 200 - 27th November, 2022

CJW: With issue 200* it seemed like a time to pause and look back at what we’ve done, so you’re getting this unlocked bonus issue covering the history of the newsletter to date, and the next real issue back-to-back. I hope you enjoy going over this retrospective as much as I enjoyed diving into the archives and remembering it.

Time to die: Is Lula finally replacing Bolsonaro in Brazilian presidency?

issue 196 - 23rd October, 2022

LZ: While Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in Brazil, this year’s October is a very spooky one for us. That’s because we’re running major elections where new deputies, senators, and the president are changing. After four years of Bolsonaro and his evangelical minions, we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel as Lula comes back to the rally. But who are all these people?

[BONUS] The Nosebleed - issue 193 - 25th September, 2022

MJW: I’m slowly working on a memoir about my six years working at the Dungeon. Here’s a little excerpt for you to enjoy, it’s called The Nosebleed and has a trigger warning for blood.

pleaseleave2.jpg

The dude’s nose starts bleeding a few minutes after I’ve pissed into his mouth and I go and ask the receptionist if my ADHD meds are likely to come out in my piss and if Vyvanse can make your nose bleed. She isn’t sure. I don’t know why I’d never thought of this before. If it does come out in my piss, that means I’m pissing pharmaceutical speed and anti-psychotics. That kind of whizz could be dangerous. Or valuable.

I give him a tissue and and he’s like, sorry and I’m like why? but I don’t say that and leave him to staunch his nosebleed in the big spa tub. I kick off my heels in the hallway and go upstairs, open my laptop and look up if meds come out in urine.

[BONUS] The Hummingbird and Other Musings - issue 190 - 11th September, 2022

# The Hummingbird If you’ve not read *Pretty Deadly*, I highly recommend it. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, it’s a horror western wrapped up in mythology and questions of death, with beautiful art by Emma Ríos. The story is narrated (after a fashion) by a butterfly and an undead rabbit – not dissimilar to the somewhat hyperactive robot narrators of Jodorowsky’s *The Metabarons* – with each issue beginning with a related story, aside, or lesson being told between the two non-human characters. The below comes from Volume One, Issue Five: ![hummingbird.jpg](https://buttondown-attachments.s3.amazonaws.com/images/d1f3f5cb-696b-461e-9a25-15a8ebef599f.jpg) *I’m afraid there’s no secret to it, Butterfly… The Hummingbird must simply work harder in the rain.* This passage, and the above line in particular, really struck me on a re-read. In some ways my depression is quite mild in that on my worst days I can still get out of bed, feed myself, shower, even attend to the day job. I can always – so far at least – do what needs to be done[^1] even as I’m being crushed beneath the weight of depression and self-loathing. On the other hand, the depression, however mild, has been constant for around twenty years.

[UNLOCKED] Britain is Burning - issue 187 - 31st July, 2022

CJW: This bonus was originally going to be a chunk of last week's newsletter, but as it grew unwieldy, we decided to save it for a bonus, which also gave Dan some time to expand on it a little.

I decided to send it out to the full list with a reminder that you can support us to get all of these bonuses as they drop. They're always pretty varied in content and form, so you never quite know what you're going to get. That's half the fun though.

  • $5 monthly subscription.
  • $50 annual subscription.
