This weekend in Norwalk: fireworks over the harbor Friday, Democracy on the Green on the Fourth, and a lighthouse cruise to Sheffield Island

Morning, Norwalk. This is the big one. The city sets off its fireworks Friday night, the Green fills up on the Fourth, and if the forecast holds you will want a plan for the heat before you have one for the grill. We sorted the weekend so you can spend less time scrolling and more time on the water.

Best for families this weekend: the Fourth of July fireworks Friday night and Democracy on the Green on Saturday are both free, both outdoors, and both built for kids who will remember exactly one thing about this summer and it will be the sky lighting up.

Thursday, July 2

Mahjong for Beginners at the Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue. A patient morning session for anyone who has watched the tiles click and wanted in. Free, 10:30 AM, all ages welcome. Details.

Heated Rivalry Meet Up at Troupe429, First Thursday of the month, 7:30 PM. The Wall Street bar screens episodes for the fans who show up in jerseys, and it has quietly become one of the more fun standing nights in the city. 21+. Eventbrite.

Friday, July 3

Norwalk 4th of July Fireworks. The city runs its show the night before the holiday, the way it has for years, so you get the fireworks Friday and still have the Fourth itself wide open. Free, bring a blanket and get there early for parking. City details.

In Case You Missed It

A dangerous heat wave is settling in for the holiday stretch. The state has activated its extreme hot weather protocol with a heat index that could push past 100 degrees through the weekend, so hydrate, check on older neighbors, and know where the cooling centers are before the Fourth. The Maritime Aquarium is debuting a new 4D experience. The SoNo anchor added a fresh immersive feature, which is exactly the kind of air-conditioned afternoon this weather calls for. Source: Patch Norwalk.

A popular cupcake chain just opened its first Connecticut location in Norwalk. New sugar in town, and it landed here first. Source: Patch Norwalk.

Saturday, July 4

Democracy on the Green. The city marks Independence Day on the Town Green with the kind of civic-minded gathering Norwalk does well, no ticket required. Free, outdoors, family-friendly. City details.

Weekly Wellness Walks at Calf Pasture Beach. A community walk along the water to start the holiday with something other than a cookout. Free, outdoors, all levels. Eventbrite.

Sunday, July 5

Cruise and Tour to Sheffield Island Lighthouse Museum, departing from 90 Water Street. The Seaport Association runs the boat out to the 1868 lighthouse for a tour and a look at the harbor from the far side of it. The best Norwalk view is the one you have to take a boat to reach. Adults and families, tickets on Eventbrite.

On the Horizon

The Sheffield Island Clambake returns Tuesday, July 7, also from 90 Water Street. Steamers, the boat ride, and the lighthouse at golden hour. If Sunday's cruise leaves you wanting the full version, this is it. Tickets.
