A New Helping Hand...

I had a really good feeling coming into 2024. I had grand plans and everything!

And while the year has been great so far, I'm already behind on the roadmap and there are only four months left in the year. 😅

A few weeks ago, Rob asked what major issues I'd regret not resolving before next year and if we should get extra help to prevent that outcome. It pained me to think of entering 2025 without addressing the long-running performance and user experience problems we have or without upgrading our user interface.

And so the idea of bringing on a remote, flexible, short-term designer became rather appealing...

And a couple days after that discussion, we got an email from somebody.

Now, we're always getting emails from people who want to work with us, but we're never looking for extra help, so the timing of this email was particularly opportune. But, on top of that, there was something that I really appreciated about the designs they'd sent: they hadn't completely re-invented the wheel. They had taken what we already had and enhanced it, with a focus on the common UX pain points they'd gathered from their own research.

So, we decided to give this person a little (paid) trial. Something that was focused, refined in scope, and not too complex or forward-facing, but would still provide value to our users.

I settled on the task of a redesign of the classic prompt-style reading challenge page:
Screenshot of the top of the old reading challenge page, which features four boxes stacked on top of one another. The first features the challenge title and host name, the second the dates, the next the progress bar, and finally the top of the description.
Screenshot of an old-style challenge prompt. It features the description in small text, the notes underneath, and two book covers representing books added to the prompt.
Screenshot of two more prompts. Both have "PROMPT COMPLETE" in gold letters above the description. One has the word "bonus" in lowercase, green writing between the "Prompt Complete" and prompt description text.
Before

A day after an introductory call to discuss the mini project, clickable prototypes and mockups were in my inbox.

Over the last few days I spent a handful of hours implementing the changes, and voilà:
Screenshot of the new prompt-style reading challenge page. It features a two column layout. The left column features the challenge title, host info, dates, and overview, and the right features a large progress circle, with two concentric rings, the outer representing main progress and the inner one representing bonus prompt progress. Both are 50% filled.
The mobile view of the page before featuring the stacked information of the reading challenge, the dates, the progress circle and the top of the overview, wiht a "Show more" button underneath.
The new prompt pane, featuring larger text, a dashed divider line between the description and notes and books added, and a right arrow icon to take you to the prompt page.
The same complete prompts before except the background of the first complete one is green and the background of the complete bonus prompt is a light blue.
After

I'm excited for what this new working relationship could have to offer and how it'll help accelerate us towards my dream of UI and UX excellence. 🤩

Watch this space! 😁

Buttondown

Thank you for all of the feedback and suggestions after the last issue regarding a new email platform. I've decided to go with Buttondown. I really liked their look and feel from their website and it seems like an awesome company to support.

I'll likely be moving over and launching pay-what-you-like supporter subscriptions by the time of the next issue or so! 👀

Up Next...

Two big things are happening — hopefully! — in the next couple of weeks. They're both exciting, though one is of the more nerve-inducing variety and the other of the more fun variety.

The first thing is a big database migration so that we can better handle large traffic spikes.

The second is our first sponsored reading challenge as part of a product launch promotion.

I'm really hoping they both go smoothly, especially the former. 😅

In a couple of weeks, a new challenge is going to appear at the top of this directory.
And we won't be the hosts...
👀

Oh...there's a third thing! I'm heading to California for a couple weeks. I get to see Rob in person again! Yay! 🙌🏾

(Psst. There's a fourth thing...but I can't say anything about that yet... 😩)

What I'm reading

I'm hoping to start (and finish) Ilyon Woo's Master Slave Husband Wife so I can listen to The Stacks Pod's Book Club episode on it!

Have a great week,

Nadia
