You can feel it too, right? Something shifted, and suddenly we’re getting flash flood watches and heat waves and smoke-filled skies forecasting apocalypse. What happened to the carefree joyous feeling of Knicks-in-five? The city never fails to surprise, to rough us up just when we’re getting comfortable. But even if you — like me — are afflicted by that Summertime Sadness (Lana was right… dancing in the dark in the pale moonlight…), there’s still so much to be had when we gather. Getting through means getting together and, sometimes, getting off. What kinds of new worlds are possible, through parties, through events, through rituals? It’s such an important question for my own art practice, and in the coming weeks I hope you’ll join me in exploring it together, as we name a hybrid spirit of Earth-and-data-center, muse on plant intelligence among rooftop wildflowers, dance in the moonlight. Better worlds are out there, we just have to make them real.

This newsletter will be on annual hiatus for the next moon cycle, as I make my way to the mountains for some residency time. I’ll be writing, creating, painting, drawing, and resting under the wane and wax of the moon. But I’m ever so excited to return to a bustling September in the city, and to share in the spirit of worldbuilding with newfound wisdom from the hummingbirds, pikas, soldier beetles and red earth of Colorado. 🌔 Naming Ceremony at Prospect Park: Waxing Gibbous (Fri Jul 24 @ 6pm). I’ve been growing the mythology around this performance character — a creature that emerged from the space between a data center and the earth — and now it’s time for the creature to receive a name. 🌔 St. James Joy Block Party at St James Pl: Waxing Gibbous (Sat Jul 25 @ 1pm). NYC summer, for me, is all about the dancing. In parks, in the streets, all day and all night — St. James Joy is always, well, joyous! Come dance. Free.

🌔 Consumption Book Club at Kingsland Wildflowers: Waxing Gibbous (Sun Jul 26 @ 4pm). We have such an incredible spread of delightful food and drink to share at this edition of Consumption Book Club, which will take place at a gorgeous rooftop pollinator garden in industrial greenpoint. Based on The Light Eaters by Zoë Schlanger, we’re exploring plant intelligence, adaptations, evolution, migration, etc etc. Come for artful activities, creative food offerings, connection with others who are interested in exploring the magical world of plants <3. $30-50 sliding scale.

🌕 Buck Moon Ritual at Fort Greene Park: Full Moon (Wed Jul 29 @ 7pm). The full moon in July is the Buck Moon—so named for the bucks whose antlers grow largest in this time of year. Gather in community under the rising full moon this Wednesday near the monument of Fort Greene Park (look for the antlers) where we'll dance, commune, and share in presence and sustenance. Bring an offering for our communal altar: an object representing strength and growth, to you. Ritual starts at 7:45! Free.

🌖 Mass for the Magnetic Field at Washington Square Park: Waning Gibbous (Sat Aug 1 @ 2pm). Connor is creating this fantastic ritual in relationship to the Earth, come through: "In the name of the dipole, the bow shock, and the self-exciting geodynamo—" Invisible, immanent, born of molten iron and rending tide, the Earth's magnetic field guides our way and protects us from harmful solar winds. Its origins are still unknown to science and its role in the possibility of life is unappreciated by many of us. We'll remix old rituals to celebrate this ancient mystery.
