MOON BULLETIN - new moon new me?

Hark! When did you last spend time with the moon? I don’t mean a glance, but a good true look. On June 29, dozens of friends and strangers gathered in Fort Greene Park to do just that, attending to the rising strawberry moon, honoring it with playful games, humble strawberry offerings, and a gasp heard round the city when she rose above horizon. We danced in the moonlight and harnessed the full energy of our beloved face-in-the-sky to guide us through a week of swelteringly joyous gatherings. Perhaps you eagerly partook in the Summer of Ludd — a week of free, public, participatory gatherings in the city — or perhaps not. Either way, the full moon has passed, and as we close out another cycle, we might see the emptying moon as invitation to empty out our gathered attachments, too.

Still, we tend to have a misconception that the “proper” way to spend a fallow period is in solitude or stoicism. In fact, this is the best time to gather! So long as we’re doing so in ways that nourish us. I see the new moon period of a cycle as a time to ask myself: in what ways might I trace the cycle of the moon through my own choices? In what ways can I sustain my own energy through this time of emptying and gradual regrowth? For me this looks like dancing, like study with friends, like finding inspiration in play and movement. It also means taking a bit of a break from the offering-energy of facilitating; after hosting at least one gathering each day for a week, my reserves are nearly depleted, and it’s time to receive some energy. In the weeks ahead, before I greet you again for the first quarter moon of the Buck Moon cycle, I’ll be doing exactly that. Perhaps you’d like to join me?

🌘 Not an Artist Talk: Tega Brain at Francis Kite Club: Waning Crescent (Wed Jul 8 @ 6:00pm). Tega makes clever art about the weird logics of computational systems + ecological crisis. Always inspiring to hear the latest she’s been cooking up. $11.91.

It will feel good in your body, in your community, in your spirit! Free.

🌘 Baalti & Friends at 314 Scholes: Waning Crescent (Sat Jul 11 @ 10:00pm). I have put a song or rework from every name on this lineup into a mix of mine at some point. Will be picking up the pieces of myself after Juliana the night before, with the help of some heavy bass and plenty of percussive surprises. $30.

🌑 Public Service at Classon Playground: New Moon (Sun Jul 12 @ 2:00pm). You may have heard me wax on and on about the amazing vibes at Toribio and Mickey Perez’ outdoor dance parties. New location means a great chance to stop by the Naval Cemetery Landscape if you haven’t already! Take a break from the sweaty dancing to enjoy a lovingly curated meadow of native plants. Free.

🌑 New Moon (Mon Jul 13). This New Moon, my personal ritual will entail reflection on my own animal body, inspired by a seminar I’m supporting on Animal Phenomenology. Primates tend to be the only mammal group that’s more active under the full moon — most carnivores and insectivores are less active under a brighter moon. How are our lives shaped by our primate bodies? And what would it mean to connect with our primate-ness under the moon, while living in the city?

🌒 Seminar on Thomas Nail's Theory of the Earth at Tompkins Square Park: Waxing Crescent (Wed Jul 15 @ 7:00pm). Connor and Henry leading this seminar-in-the-park to chat about how the instability and nonlinearity of Anthropocene climate processes require a new theory of the earth.
