Ah, September. The true start to the new year, if you ask me. Kids going back to school, temperatures finally dipping. Fresh off my month-long sojourn to the alpine meadows of Colorado, I’m feeling invigorated and a tad overstimulated by the ever flowing currents of social life back home in NYC. It’s good to be back.

As with every year, I was visited by Thoughts, Concepts, and Ideas abound while traversing the mountains. And many of them were oriented towards the worlds I seek to create now that I’m back in the city. Join me and friends to co-create some of these worlds, setting things into motion. There’s a lot of excitement on the horizon… hope to see you soon!

🌘 Ice Cream Pop-Up in Bushwick: Waning Crescent (Sun Sept 6 @ 5pm). I have a really fond memory of dj-ing at Aishah’s going away party and being handed a cup of the most delicious homemade ice cream during my set. Now she’s back and sharing the treats far and wide. Yum! Free.

🌘 The Namesake Screening at Fort Greene Park: Waning Crescent (Wed Sept 9 @ 6pm). One time in college Jhumpa Lahiri told me my outfit was amazing. As we walked away my friend goes “wait… was that Jhumpa Lahiri??” Anyways, The Namesake is based upon her short story, and now there’s a 20th anniversary screening in the park. One of the last outdoor movie screenings of the season, too. Free.

🌘 Prospect Park Circlesing in Prospect Park: Waning Crescent (Wed Sept 9 @ 6:30pm). Join Maya for an improvisational circlesing in the park during sunset, based in the practice of Música do Círculo. As someone who very rarely sings around others, I can vouch that this is an approachable and accepting practice! Free, $5-15 suggested donation.

🌑 New Moon Study Group: Amusing Ourselves to Death in Fort Greene Park: New Moon (Thu Sept 10 @ 6pm). Gather under the trees of Fort Greene and read + discuss how media theory on television applies today. Shrin is a devoted and generous facilitator. Free with RSVP.

🌑 Against Tech Oligarchy: The Trial of Jeff Bezos at Vanderbilt Hall (NYU): New Moon (Thu Sept 10 @ 7pm). More book launches that aren’t just boring book talks, please. This one should be exciting, bringing together labor organizers and tech critics to hear out the evidence on Jeff’s crimes. As someone who has impersonated a far-future version of Bezos before, bald cap and all (long story…), I think I know how this one might turn out… $27.95, hardcover book included.

🌑 New Moon (Fri Sept 11). September is a month of transitions. Back to school, back to work, autumn on the horizon. It’s frequently some of the most chaotic and energizing weeks of the year, for me. I’m taking this new moon as an opportunity to have a moment of rest and solitude amongst the chaos. Perhaps this is a chance for you to do the same — light a candle, burn some sage, clear your mind, let the feelings flow.

🌑 Strangers Teach-in at Tompkins Square Park: New Moon (Sat Sept 12 @ 2pm). What might happen when we move outside our social habits, and truly engage with the social potential of living in a city? Nick’s facilitating this teach-in that will engage texts and practices of getting to know the co-inhabitants of our lovely city. Free, meet by the pool in the North end of the park.

🌑 Soup Sets in Bed-Stuy: New Moon (Sat Sept 12 @ 8pm). We make four soups, we dj four sets. You bring a bowl (and spoon), you dance. Come through! Free.

🌒 Public Service in Maria Hernandez Park: Waxing Crescent (Sun Sept 13 @ 2pm). According to me in the Gothamist, it’s a bit utopian. And I stand by it! Come dance for the final Public Service of the year. It’s a bittersweet goodbye to the season of free outdoor dance parties, and a great way to welcome the autumn. Also, as with last year, I am making it an unofficial birthday celebration. Free.

🌒 Birthday Burial at Nellie’s Lawn (Prospect Park): Waxing Crescent (Mon Sept 14 @ 6pm). You are all invited, whether we know each other well, barely, or not at all. I’ve been craving a little burial for my day. And pie! Free.

🌒 New Rat City at Tompkins Square Park: Waxing Crescent (Wed Sept 16 @ 8pm). In one hour, we will learn about rats, and we will become rats. It’s New Rat City, baby, we’re just livin’ in it. Free, meet by the Hare Krishna tree.
