MOON BULLETIN - rejoice! transitions!
I can’t get enough of this time of year. It’s the transition of it all — back to school, cool morning air (finally!), fall migration begins and I celebrate another year alive on earth. As always during times of transition, I find the best way through is to keep moving. And move I have: from sunrise techno sets in the West Virginia mountains to Soup Sets on a Bed-Stuy rooftop to the bittersweet final Public Service of the season in Maria Hernandez Park — I’m getting my fill of grooving, and hope you are, too.

These also tend to be some of the busiest days of the year, so it’s nice to take some time with ourselves. I’m writing from along the NE Corridor Amtrak route, off to celebrate the eternal love of some dear friends. Weddings are transitions, too, like birthdays and harvests. With the Harvest Moon upcoming, now’s a time to ask what we’d like to carry with us through this transition, and what we’d like to bury. I’m practicing that, literally, with a delightful burial ritual to mark my own transition into my twenty-eighth year of life. And I hope to celebrate and reflect with some of yall as we honor the Full Corn Moon. Countless other ways to transition with community, with creativity, and with conviviality. As usual, some curated offerings for your perusal:

Olivia and I have been dreaming up an offering for new and old friends alike: a restful, regenerative winter retreat, inspired by the symbol of the spiral. 🗑️ Join Radical Trash Studies by Waxing Gibbous (Sept 22). I’m host (not teaching, more like… I take out the trash at the end of the night, ha) for this seminar all about the trash we generate and where it goes. As someone who can’t stop thinking about single use plastic every time I unwrap one of my beloved salad kits (…), I’m excited to be challenged to trace the stories of where our trash even goes, and what we can learn when we watch. $200-280, three sessions, scholarships available.

🌓 DISORIENTATION at Newtown Radio (262 Meserole St): First Quarter (Fri Sept 18 @ 10pm). Dance and frolic while gathering some donations to help put food on the table in Lebanon with Cece, Abbi, Anagha, and other friends. Free, collecting donations to food aid in Lebanon.
🌓 RETURN OF THE BUFFALO: TATANKA OWE AKUPI in Lower Manhattan & Downtown Brooklyn: First Quarter (Fri Sept 18 @ 5pm & Sat Sept 19 @ 2pm). It’s a weekend of puppetry. For this much-anticipated performance, a herd of life-size buffalo puppets will descend upon the core of American empire, traversing the streets with performances from choirs, famous artists, dancers, and more. It’s this kind of activation of public space that offers a way to relate to our city outside of the endless chomping of the capitalist machine. Buffaloes vs. finance bros; my money’s on the buffalo. Free.
🌔 INFRASTRUCTURE PARTY in Crown Heights: Waxing Gibbous (Thu Sept 24 @ 7pm). Come gather on Alec’s rooftop to talk infrastructure, learn about how it shapes our lives, and relish in the company of fellow infrastructure nerds. Free, email [email protected] to RSVP.

Another iteration of my project in developing and sharing the magic of party hosting (and attending), come discuss how parties work, how they’ve shaped history, and bring your own party idea to workshop with others. This will be a casual hang at the top of the park, to the East of the monument — look for me in my red hat. Free.

🌕 Corn Moon Ritual in Fort Greene Park: Full Moon (Sat Sept 26 @ 7pm). September’s full moon is the Corn Moon, but it’s also the Harvest Moon — so let’s enjoy a picnic potluck of seasonal dishes. Bring an offering for our communal harvest altar: something seasonal and delicious to share with friends and strangers under the rising moon (bonus points if you incorporate corn). Free.

🌕 Poetry & Produce at Index Greenpoint: Full Moon (Sun Sept 27 @ 2pm).
