Memory Rising: May 2024

In this month’s edition:

Memory Rising celebrated its one-year anniversary on May 1. Growing this funky little one-woman business has been such an incredible joy. I’m heading into Year Two thinking about how to ensure the business has staying power for the long haul, which means being discerning about how I design my work days/weeks/months to be as supportive as possible. After a year in business, I’ve learned a lot about the clients I love working with, where I like to spend my energy, and the work I’m hoping to do in the future. I feel very fortunate to be in this position, and am so thankful for how much support I’ve received from so many of you. Thanks! -Eira

# Help me develop new workshops! I am considering creating two new workshops this fall for the general public about managing archives and doing archival research. I’d like to see how much interest there might be from my existing subscribers. If you could answer these two very quick questions, I would appreciate your input! # California Rare Book School seminar on Archives and Climate Change Don’t experience climate change alone. You need a community! One way to be in conversation with others about the effects of climate change on our archives and our profession is to sign up for this week-long seminar I’m teaching at [California Rare Book School](https://memoryrising.us21.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33964c505212f62c031cc170e&id=38efb97cec&e=bbb30a3d7e) August 5-9!




You’ll be exposed to key readings, we will learn together through discussion, and I’ll provide some live lectures. We’ll also spend some time getting hands-on experience using web-based climate change data visualization and mapping tools.




All information and cultural heritage professionals are welcome. The course is four hours per day between 10 AM and 3:30 PM Eastern for a week. Rotenstein, article) - The sad truth is that the majority of local government records and archives efforts are understaffed and underfunded. Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a great municipal archive, and this is useful article compares the situation of the county records situation with the city records situation. Speaking as a resident of a major Midwestern city without a good municipal archive… if anyone from a good government/civic engagement group would like to hire me to do a nationwide survey of local government records…. we should talk.

The Time Zone Converter website allows you to add several different time zones at once to determine ideal meeting times, and also factors in local holidays. A complete game changer for navigating scheduling challeges!




🔌 [Power and the Land](https://youtu.be/-KVwWAJBJUA?feature=shared) (film) - New Deal era government films are my catnip (and very useful as I work on my New Deal podcast, debuting this fall!). My new favorite is POWER AND THE LAND, which features rural electrification, a funky spoken word corn harvesting scene, and a renewed appreciation for how much easier ironing is with electricity than having to heat irons on the stove.
