It’s the time of the year when it’s not too hot and everything is already very lush and green outside. The picture above is some of our seemingly indestructible St. John’s Wort. Even though it’s right next to our driveway and we regularly drive over it when we back out into the street, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
I hope wherever you are, you have exciting plans for the summer. I’m looking forward to some regional travel to Louisville, Chicago, and St. Louis over the coming months. If you’re in any of those cities and want to meet up, shoot me an email! -Eira

# I’m running for Society of American Archivists Council! Vote by June 30
I’m running for office!✌️ If elected to the Society of American Archivists’ (SAA) Council for the 2024-2027 term, I will work to build alliances with climate justice organizations, advocate for expanded federal appropriations for archives, develop workshops for archivists interested in unionization, and formalize SAA’s data gathering on salary and workplace benefits.
SAA has been a source of support throughout my career. To learn more about me and the inspiration behind my candidacy, please read my [candidate statement](https://www2.archivists.org/governance/election/2024/Tansey).
If you’re an SAA member in good standing, please vote in the election between [June 17 and June 30](https://www2.archivists.org/governance/election/2024). And remind 1-3 SAA member colleagues to vote, too! 🗳️
# California Rare Book School seminar on Archives and Climate Change
Don’t experience climate change alone. You need a community! One way to be in conversation with others about the effects of climate change on our archives and our profession is to sign up for this week-long seminar I’m teaching at [California Rare Book School](https://memoryrising.us21.list-manage.com/track/click?u=33964c505212f62c031cc170e&id=38efb97cec&e=bbb30a3d7e) August 5-9!
You’ll be exposed to key readings, we will learn together through discussion, and I’ll provide some live lectures. We’ll also spend some time getting hands-on experience using web-based climate change data visualization and mapping tools.
All information and cultural heritage professionals are welcome. The course is four hours per day between 10 AM and 3:30 PM Eastern for a week. ### National Endowment for the Humanities:
- [Humanities Collections and Reference Resources](https://www.neh.gov/grants/preservation/humanities-collections-and-reference-resources) grants fund collection assessments, deaccessioning planning, processing plans, and inventorying archival records. Due July 16.
- [Climate Smart Humanities Organizations](https://www.neh.gov/program/climate-smart-humanities-organizations-0) grants fund climate change mitigation and adaptation assessments and the development of climate adaptation plans. Due September 12.
### National Historical Publications and Records Commission:
The optional draft deadline for all of these funding opportunities is August 15.
- [Capacity Building for Historically Black Colleges and Universities Archives](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/hbcu-archives) funds the development of climate action plans and the creation and implementation of a traveling archivist program.
- The [Archival Projects](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/archival.html) fund supports inventorying and assessing archival records and collection processing plans.
- [Publishing Historical Records in Collaborative Digital Editions](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/editions.html) funds research and publishing in social justice movement history.
### Institute for Museum and Library Services:
- [National Leadership Grants for Libraries](https://www.imls.gov/grants/available/national-leadership-grants-libraries) fund projects that support the development of emergency and disaster management plans. Such work will be critical as organizations adapt to climate change. Due September 20.
### Regional Grants:
- Pennsylvania: [Historical & Archival Records Care (HARC)](https://www.phmc.pa.gov/Preservation/Grants-Funding/Pages/Records-Care-Grants.aspx) grants, administered by the Pennsylvania State Historical Records Advisory Board, support inventorying and assessing archival records, records management, collection processing plans, and many other activities. # This month’s recommendations
🐦 [Dead Bird Rabbit Hole](https://outsideinradio.org/shows/dead-bird-rabbit-hole) (podcast episode) - A poignant, heartbreaking, and hopeful episode from Outside/In (a terrific environmental podcast from New Hampshire Public Radio) about bird injuries and accidents from bird strikes associated with tall buildings, and about the fixes that can dramatically improve bird fatalities.
🎨 [Make Your Art No Matter What](https://www.bethpickens.com/) (book) - Beth Pickens’ guide to frequently occurring creative barriers is an incredible resource that I can’t stop recommending to everyone I know, regardless of whether they consider themselves an artist or not. I find that a lot of creative practice books ring hollow because they can gloss over systemic injustices. Pickens’ book is a welcome exception, and very much grounded in her work with practicing artists and creatives from a variety of mediums and backgrounds.
