Hi friends! I know you just got an email from me about the Detritus Salon this Saturday, but I guess I just made my June a busy one, because I also have to write you about the upcoming
Lake Union Civic Orchestra concert!
The concert is on Saturday, June 16th, at 7:30pm, at
First Free Methodist Church. Tickets are available
online and at the door. This is our final concert of the season before we go on our summer break.
We are playing two things:
- Brahms: Piano Concerto No.1, with Joel Fan, piano
My favorite thing about this piece is that Brahms does playful things with the rhythm throughout that keep me on my toes- just when you think a theme is going to repeat itself, it gets a little shorter, and things happen a little sooner than you expect them to. Also, Joel Fan is a long-time friend of LUCO who is always a treat to work with and to see in concert.
- Bernstein: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
We're gonna have a rumble tonight. This is Leonard Bernstein taking the excellent music from West Side Story and compiling it into a big orchestral work.
I've been working on my finger snap technique for weeks. What more do I need to tell you? Come mambo with me. You may be interested in the fact that Bernstein plays with rhythm in this suite in the same way that I just talked about Brahms doing. Listen for that, or just chair-dance along.
Astute readers will have noted that this concert is on the day of the Fremont Solstice Parade, and here is a map to the venue just for you, in case you feel like making a day of it. The only bad part about this is that the blackberries along the Ship Canal Trail won't quite be ripe yet.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that LUCO is holding an online auction this month as a fundraiser.
Take a look and see if anything strikes your fancy!
As always, thanks for reading.
