Practice makes P...

…Progress.

Now that the weather is (maybe?) warming up I have started painting outside again.

I decided to go to the same location as my first outdoor painting session last year to see if there were any differences.

The 2 images below are from the same spot, but the beavers have been busy so it looks a little different. I also chose a view which included more distance instead of a view that was slabby and flat. The lighting was vastly different on these days. In the first image it had actually started snowing as I finished up, whereas the second one it was a bright and sunny day that allowed for more color expression.

I also changed my mind frame for this session and focused less on creating a ‘piece of art’ and more on playing around and trying to understand different lighting and composition techniques.

The second set of images parallels some of the same ideas as the first. It’s less panoramic, more focused, and I felt like I was really leaning into the colors and feeling of the day.

I did not become a master en plein air painter in the last year, but I got outside and experienced awesome scenes, played around with paint, got inspired, saw a bunch of birds, and improved my skills.

Practice doesn’t make perfect, it means progress, and to me, progress is measured in tiny increments that are fed by enjoyment, nature, and being immersed in my surroundings.

Thank you so much for supporting me and my creative endeavor. I appreciate all of you.
