New website, Eurorack sonification & Photospheric Variations
Hello friends,
We’re Duncan and Miriam, and together we’re Loud Numbers - a data sonification studio. You’re getting this email because you signed up for our newsletter, and you can unsubscribe at any time with the link in the footer.
Check out the new Loud Numbers Website
Six months in the making, the Loud Numbers data sonification studio now has a proper website! Check it out at loudnumbers.net.
We’ve gone from one long page in handwritten HTML, focused on the podcast, to a whole Squarespace extravaganza that highlights our various sonification projects (including the podcast!), our community-building, and our custom-built tools and workshops.
If you want to know more, or you might have a project for us, then hit reply to this message.
The Decibels Sonification Community is growing
Since we last wrote to you, our sonification community, Decibels, has grown to a whopping 91 people - sharing their work, experiences, techniques and resources. So far we’ve organised a monthly challenge, a member directory, a knowledgebase, a monthly show-and-tell meetup, and we’re planning much much more.
If you’re someone who works with data and sound or you’re just sonification-curious, then we’d love to welcome you to the gang! It’s free and easy, just head on over to decibels.community and hit “Join the Community”.
Sonification in Eurorack
Modular synths are a really fun way of working with sonification, so Duncan has written up a blog post outlining how he brings data into the world of Eurorack. It runs through a few viable approaches, and shows off the specialised sonification case that he put together for the purpose.
Check out the blog post here.
Photospheric Variations
Want to see those principles in action? Head on over to YouTube and check out Photospheric Variations - an ambient sonification piece that Duncan put together from 321 years of sunspot data, using his Eurorack setup.
Loud Numbers is now on Mastodon
If you’re part of the Twitter exodus, we’ve established a presence in the fediverse on the podcasts.social server. You can follow Loud Numbers on Mastodon at podcasts.social/@loudnumbers.
