Devlog #47: Loud Numbers is out tomorrow!
Hello friends,
Formalities first. This is the Loud Numbers Development Log - a newsletter where we (Duncan and Miriam) are sharing the process of putting together Loud Numbers - a data sonification podcast. You’re getting it because you signed up at loudnumbers.net, and you can unsubscribe at any time with the link in the footer.
Loud Numbers will be released tomorrow
This is the newsletter we’ve been waiting 18 months to send. After a year and a half of work, we’re finally ready to release Loud Numbers to the world. All the sonifications are done. All the scripts are written. All the episodes are edited (more or less, see below). And we can’t wait for you to hear it.
There are lots of ways to listen. The best way is to attend the Loud Numbers Sonification Festival tomorrow. Starting at 4pm UK time (that’s 11am in New York, 8am in LA, 5pm in Berlin, 8.30pm in Mumbai, and 1am in Sydney - sorry Sydney). We’ve collected some of the world’s foremost experts in sonification for a series of talks, workshops and even a gameshow. Put a reminder in your Google calendar.
When the festival begins, here’s the link you’ll want to click to join: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X17zV8-4CdI
We’ll send that link to you again tomorrow, an hour before the event begins.
Just want to listen to the podcast? No problem. Search for “Loud Numbers” in your favourite podcast client, and hit “subscribe”. The first episode will then arrive on your device at 5pm UK time on 5 June (tomorrow), and every episode thereafter at the very moment it’s released. If you can’t find the podcast for any weird reason then add the RSS feed instead.
Finally, you can also listen to the tracks by themselves. Again, search for “Loud Numbers” in your favourite streaming software. Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, whatever. We should be on all of them from 5pm UK time tomorrow. We strongly recommend adding the tracks to a playlist called BIG SUMMER HITS and blasting them out at every social opportunity.
What we’ve done this week
This week has been a blur of last minute fixes and tweaks and to-dos. Miriam finished A Symphony For Bureaucracy after sitting down, putting her phone in airplane mode, and refusing to get up again until it was done. The result is a spectacular sonification of EU bureaucracy over time, which you’ll hear in a few weeks (it’s episode four).
We’ve also been doing lots of last-minute promotion of the launch festival, conducting tech tests with speakers, emailing press about the launch, and just generally getting everything finished. We’re 100% there now for the first episode, and we’ll get the last edits together for the rest next week.
That’s all for today. See you tomorrow at the festival!
- Miriam & Duncan
