New Song: Seattle

hi friends,

Well. Here we are! This is the song. It's called Seattle.

Stars on the ceiling White washed walls, plants in the corner Mugs full of coffee Out on the porch, morning by morning
You built your life up How you want it I’m glad to watch it You said you’ll s

I recommend listening with headphones because I did some panning stuff in the mix, and that's how it's best heard.

I wrote the song in early March 2020 while I was in Seattle (shocking, I know) taking a breather from mardi gras. I was hanging with my sister Rebekah, helping her get furniture for her then-new apartment*. I slept on her pink couch and woke up and wrote most of this song the next morning. It's the last song I wrote before the covid shut down. That's correct, in an ironic turn, I wrote the line "I'm always homesick for the wrong time, golden and distant" before the pandemic. Fucking wild, dude**.

Pre-hurricane, I'd made the beat***, and put down all the background vocals. I'd also recorded like 25 takes of the main vocal, and they were all just... meh. I was preparing to do another day of more takes, when the alerts started pouring in for Ida, and I left town.

Here's what I didn't know before I got to Illinois: it's a weed state.

A few nights into evac I was en route to becoming quite high and was like "I wonder if being high affects my sense of pitch****"

I went to the bedroom I was staying in, put my phone down and started singing this song into my voice memos. I sang it like five or six times (while listening to the track I already had, I'm not that good).

The next day, I shook all the voice memos into Logic, listened to them all layered on top of each other and rather liked it. Thus, the main vocal that you're hearing is made of four tracks. A voice memo of high lauren + one of the 25 tracks I'd already recorded in the middle. And then one voice memo each of high lauren on the left and right.

And you know what? it doesn't sound terrible.

I'm working on a fall playlist for next newsletter, which I'm gonna send next week to wrench myself back onto schedule. Feel free to suggest any moopy acoustic songs that you love ;)

**dude, is of course, a gender neutral term.

***of which I am inordinately fond

****it doesn't, but it does present some logistical problems to performance, namely that at a certain point I just want to become (and remain) horizontal
