September Newsletter
The August roundup of content from https://jola.dev.
Balancing out last month's very productive writing with a less productive one, I only had two blog posts in September! Instead I've been spending some time working on the Tranquil PDS project, where I was recently made a maintainer. I've also released a brand new Elixir library for subscribing and following the atproto jetstream, giving you all the activity of the protocol live over a websocket.
I've got some really good ideas for blog posts so keep an eye out in October. For now, here's September's roundup:
Blog posts
Migrating your Bluesky account the hard way - One of the coolest features of atproto, that Bluesky is built on, is that if you don't like your server operator you can just pack up and move your account somewhere else. I recently did that, fully from the command line.
AI is antithetical to learning - The goals of the big model companies and the goals of individual software engineers writing code for fun are not aligned. LLMs could be incredible tools for learning, but in practice they often subtly side-line you in ways that are hard to resist.
See you next month
Expect to see a lot more updates around the brand new link aggregator built on top of atproto, shelf.cafe, including details on how to build your own atproto backlink index, and what makes it so fast.
Please feel very welcome to find me on Bluesky at @jola.dev and let me know what you think.
