October Newsletter

The October roundup of content from https://jola.dev.

October has been a month of Rust for me. Apart from continuing to contribute to Tranquil, I've been working on a few patches for Slingshot that significantly reduce the memory bloat over time and improve cache hit rates. I gotta admit, I still prefer writing Elixir, but there are a lot of interesting and fun Rust projects out there.

Blog posts

Migrating from 1Password to Bitwarden - After 1Password's recent political moves, funding an open source project that's blatantly trying to marginalize queer people and minorities, I canceled my subscription after 10 years. Turns out, it was really easy to switch, and Bitwarden might be a bit less polished, but it works great.

Building an atproto link aggregator - I finally got around to writing up some learnings and thoughts around building shelf.cafe, the atproto link aggregator. It started out as an experiment in what bubbles.town would look like on atproto, and turned into its own thing.

Making your own atproto backlink index - Continuing on the topic of shelf.cafe, I dug into the technology that powers it, and especially the backlinks feature, where I use Kite to create an atproto jetstream subscriber and record every single time someone links to content I care about. Plus, bloom filters and atomics!

Thoughts on standard.site - After having both used standard.site to publish my own blog, and through annot.at to help others publish their own blogs through their RSS feeds, I wanted to write up some of the rough edges and areas for improvement for the very successful community lexicon.

The time Bluesky tried to kill my server - Finishing with the most exciting blog post I've ever written. It started with me getting alerted by my observability suite that my server was pinned at 100% CPU and had been for some time, and evolves into going down a rabbit hole of CBOR, CAR, Sync 1.1, and oversized commits.

See you next month

I'm gonna do my best to find time to write in November, but life and work are conspiring against me. It is very time consuming to write this blog, as much as I enjoy it! I should put a note here that if you liked my blog posts please consider buying me a coffee on Ko-Fi or sponsoring me on Github. Thank you!

Please feel very welcome to find me on Bluesky at @jola.dev and let me know what you think.
