U.S. Army Apache Helicopter Crashes Near Strait of Hormuz; Both Crew Members Rescued
Associated Press | cnn.com
|
|
A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter went down early Tuesday off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz while on patrol, the U.S. military's Central Command confirmed. The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time, and both crew members were rescued from the water within roughly two hours and are listed in stable condition.
President Donald Trump addressed the incident late Monday night while speaking to reporters at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, where he had been attending the NBA Finals. 'The pilots are fine, nobody injured,' Trump told reporters, adding that a formal report would be issued the following day. U.S. Central Command spokesman Capt. Timothy Hawkins confirmed that a U.S. Navy surface drone located and rescued the crew from the water.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The incident marks the first loss of an Apache helicopter since the United States began striking Iran on Feb. 28, a conflict that has also drawn in Israel and destabilized the broader Middle East region. The loss comes one day after Iran and Israel exchanged direct strikes in what officials described as the most serious breach yet of an April ceasefire.
Apache helicopters have played a central role in U.S. operations in the region, including enforcing a blockade on Iranian crude oil shipments and engaging Iranian small boats and drones. According to a Congressional Research Service report issued in May, the U.S. military has lost dozens of aircraft since the war began, including at least five fighter jets, seven Stratotanker refueling aircraft, a search-and-rescue helicopter, and more than two dozen drones.
The broader conflict has had significant global economic consequences, driving up energy prices and increasing the cost of basic goods including food. Diplomatic efforts to convert the April ceasefire into a permanent end to hostilities have so far failed, with Israel continuing to expand its military campaign in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah.
