U.S. Strikes Iranian Defense Sites After Apache Helicopter Downed Over Strait of Hormuz; Iran Retaliates Against American Bases

The United States launched retaliatory airstrikes against Iran on Tuesday after a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter was shot down while patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, sparking a rapid exchange of military attacks between the two countries. U.S. Central Command said strikes began at 5 p.m. ET at President Donald Trump's direction and concluded shortly after 9 p.m. ET, targeting Iranian air defense systems, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites at roughly 20 locations along the Iranian coastline, including sites on Qeshm Island and near Bandar Abbas, Goruk, and Jask.
The two American pilots aboard the downed helicopter were rescued within approximately two hours by an unmanned surface vessel — a drone boat operated by Task Force 59 — in what U.S. officials described as the first such rescue of its kind by American forces. Both crew members were recovered off the coast of Oman and were reported to be in stable condition, though they required medical attention. A U.S. official indicated the helicopter was most likely brought down by an Iranian drone.
Iran denied direct responsibility for the incident but launched a large-scale retaliatory response after the U.S. strikes, firing 21 missiles and drones at American military targets in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, according to U.S. officials. Most of the incoming projectiles were intercepted. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that foreign forces near Iranian territory face constant risk but stopped short of acknowledging any Iranian role in downing the helicopter, stating that the best solution was for U.S. forces to leave the region.
The exchange of strikes injected fresh turbulence into ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which Trump had described as recently as Monday as being in their "final throes." Following the overnight escalation, Trump posted on Truth Social that Iran had taken "too long" to agree to a deal and would "have to pay the price," declaring that "The Bully of the Middle East is DEAD." Global markets reacted sharply, with S&P 500 futures falling roughly 1 percent, Nasdaq 100 futures dropping 1.3 percent, and Dow futures declining 460 points in early trading.
Analysts cautioned against interpreting the exchange as a full return to open warfare. Firas Maksad of the Eurasia Group told the BBC that the U.S. strikes were "carefully choreographed" and limited in scope, targeting radar and coastal military facilities rather than broader Iranian infrastructure. Maksad characterized the situation as a "managed conflict" in which neither side seeks to fully resume hostilities, while noting that Iran continues to test American patience in negotiations and that the longer-term trajectory of any diplomatic agreement remains uncertain.
