Israel and Iran Exchange Direct Strikes; Trump Demands Halt as Iran Announces Suspension of Operations
nbcnews.com | cnn.com | abcnews.com

Israel and Iran traded direct military strikes Monday in the worst escalation since a ceasefire took effect in April, with the Israeli Defense Forces conducting strikes on military targets in western and central Iran and Iran launching missile barrages toward Israel in retaliation. The exchanges marked the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since the April truce and were triggered by Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, Lebanon. Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi forces also fired a missile toward Israel during the escalation.

Iran subsequently announced a suspension of armed forces operations, with its central military headquarters, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central HQ, stating that Israel had received "heavy, targeted, intelligent, and damaging strikes" in support of Lebanon. The statement warned, however, that "far more severe and crushing measures" would follow if Israeli operations in southern Lebanon continued. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said Israel would not accept any equation in which strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut were met with Iranian attacks on Israeli population centers.

President Donald Trump publicly called on both sides to stop shooting and later stated the two countries were moving toward a ceasefire, insisting a broader diplomatic deal was close. A U.S. official said Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off on retaliating against Iran before the escalation intensified. Notably, Iran did not strike American military bases in the region, did not attack shipping lanes broadly, and did not fire on Gulf state targets such as Dubai or Kuwait, which a senior U.S. military official told NBC News may signal Tehran's desire to avoid a wider war involving the United States and its Gulf allies.

The escalation unfolded against a backdrop of ongoing conflict rooted in the broader regional war. According to ABC News, President Trump announced major joint U.S.-Israeli combat operations against Iran in February, and initial peace talks in Pakistan in April failed to produce a deal, after which Trump declared an open-ended ceasefire extension and continued a U.S. blockade pending negotiations. A central sticking point remains Lebanon: Iran has demanded that any peace agreement cover Lebanon, home to its proxy force Hezbollah, while the United States and Israel have insisted Lebanon be treated as a separate matter.

Markets reacted sharply to the developments before partially recovering. U.S. crude oil futures surged as much as 5.4% before retreating to a gain of roughly 1.5% after Iran announced its suspension of operations, while stock futures moved higher on the same news. Separately, a U.S.-sanctioned oil tanker, the Motor Tanker Marivex, was reported to be on fire and sinking off the coast of Oman, with its crew of 24 Indian seafarers issuing a distress call claiming a U.S. Navy missile strike; U.S. Central Command had not responded to CNN's request for comment. Whether Monday's exchanges represent an isolated spike in hostilities or the beginning of a broader collapse of the April ceasefire remained unclear.
