Trump Campaigns Across Midwest Ahead of Midterms as Approval Ratings Sink, Party Faces Headwinds
aljazeera.com | theguardian.com

President Donald Trump held rallies in Ohio and Oklahoma this week as part of a planned 32-day campaign blitz aimed at bolstering Republican candidates ahead of November midterm elections. At a Saturday rally in Vandalia, Ohio, Trump told supporters there would be a "big surprise" on election day and urged them to turn out to vote, saying, "If you do that, we're going to win, and we're going to win big." Trump campaigned specifically for Ohio Republican Sen. Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, among others.

Husted faces a competitive race against Democrat Sherrod Brown and hopes Trump's appearance will energize Republican base voters who might otherwise skip a midterm election. Husted told reporters he believes the United States must win the ongoing war with Iran "on our terms" and emphasized he is "fighting for lower prices" for constituents. Trump used a significant portion of his rally remarks to defend data centers and AI infrastructure investment in Ohio, an issue that has become politically contentious amid bipartisan voter concerns over electricity costs, farmland use, and water consumption.

Trump's political standing has deteriorated since his 2024 presidential election victory, when he captured more than 55 percent of the Ohio vote. Ohio gasoline prices have risen 35 percent over the past year to an average of $4.16 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association, and Trump's trade policies have triggered retaliatory Canadian tariffs affecting roughly $3 billion in Ohio exports. His national approval rating has reached an all-time low, with voters expressing frustration over the cost of living, the Iran war, and immigration enforcement actions.

Some Republican strategists have openly questioned whether Trump's high-visibility campaigning helps or hurts the party's chances. Political strategist Steve Schmidt said Trump's rallies have become "his lead weight" and that "the American people are sick and tired of him," arguing the midterm elections are fundamentally a referendum on the president. Despite those concerns, Trump allies and rally attendees say the events remain energizing for supporters and serve as a direct line between the president and the Republican base. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, and the midterm results will determine whether the party retains control of the legislative branch for the remainder of Trump's term.
