Brazil's Presidential Race Heads to October Runoff After Bolsonaro Edges Lula in First Round
theguardian.com | aljazeera.com | theguardian.com

Brazil's presidential election will proceed to a second round on October 25 after neither candidate secured the outright majority required to win outright. With 99.9 percent of votes counted, far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro received approximately 47 percent of valid votes to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's 45 percent, translating to roughly 56 million votes for Bolsonaro against 53.8 million for Lula.

The result came as a surprise to pollsters, who had predicted Lula would lead after the first round. Bolsonaro, 45, the eldest son of jailed former President Jair Bolsonaro, declared the outcome signaled 'the end of an era' for Lula's Workers' Party, while Lula acknowledged the night was difficult, telling supporters in São Paulo: 'I confess to you that I was convinced I was going to win the election in the first round.' Lula pledged to launch a renewed campaign ahead of the runoff, saying the two-candidate format would allow voters to clearly see the differences between the two men.

The broader Bolsonarista movement performed strongly across Brazil's legislative and gubernatorial races. Jair Bolsonaro's second son Carlos and wife Michelle both won senate seats, his youngest son Jair Renan was elected to the lower house, and former infrastructure minister Tarcísio de Freitas was reelected governor of São Paulo. Of 54 senators elected, 34 were aligned with the right or far right, underscoring the breadth of the movement's gains.

Analysts attributed part of Bolsonaro's stronger-than-expected first-round showing to so-called protest votes — supporters of other right-leaning candidates who prioritized defeating Lula and shifted their backing earlier than anticipated. Other first-round candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado with 2.1 percent and Renan Santos with 2.2 percent, have said they will not formally endorse either candidate in the runoff, leaving millions of votes in play. Polls ahead of election day showed the runoff essentially tied.

The stakes extend well beyond Brazil's borders. Latin America's largest economy is grappling with cost-of-living pressures, elevated crime rates, and a strained relationship with the United States, and the region as a whole has trended sharply rightward in recent elections. Jair Bolsonaro, serving a 27-year prison sentence for masterminding a failed coup after losing the 2022 election, has endorsed his son's campaign and has expressed hope that a Flávio Bolsonaro victory could lead to his release. The winner of the October 25 runoff will assume office on January 5, 2027.
