Trump Targets Kentucky Rep. Massie in Primary as GOP Weighs Cost of Dissent
nbcnews.com | bbc.com | latimes.com

|
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky faces the most difficult reelection campaign of his career ahead of next Tuesday's Republican primary, after President Donald Trump made a rare personal trip to the state to campaign against him and recruited a challenger, former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, to run in his place. Trump has publicly called Massie a "moron" and a "nut job," labeling him "the WORST Republican Congressman," and has deployed senior advisors to support Gallrein's campaign in a district Trump carried by 35 points in 2024.
Massie drew Trump's wrath by voting against the president's signature tax legislation, citing concerns over adding to the national debt, by pushing for the release of Jeffrey Epstein files, and by opposing Trump's decision to pursue military action against Iran. Massie has argued that his positions are consistent with the America First principles Trump championed during his initial campaign, and has retained support from state-level Republicans, including state Sen. Gex Williams, who told party members at a Lincoln Day Dinner in Covington that voters can support both Trump and Massie simultaneously.
The Kentucky race is the most high-profile front in a broader effort by Trump to remove Republican dissenters from office. The president successfully pushed out several Indiana state legislators who opposed his redistricting plan last week, and is also backing a primary challenger against U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. Massie himself acknowledged to the Associated Press that the upcoming contest is "by far the most challenging reelection I've ever faced."
Republican voters in Kentucky's 4th Congressional District, which runs from the Louisville suburbs along the Ohio River through the Cincinnati exurbs and into Appalachian coal country, are divided. Some attendees at the Lincoln Day Dinner expressed unease about a party that punishes independent thinking, while others feel bound by loyalty to the president. The outcome will serve as a significant test of whether Trump's ability to enforce party discipline has grown since 2020, when the same district ignored his earlier calls to remove Massie from office.
