Pennsylvania House Primary Tests Whether Democrats Should Run on Economy or Anti-Trump Message

A Democratic primary in Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District has emerged as a closely watched contest that reflects a broader debate inside the party about how to compete in the 2026 midterm elections. The race in the Lehigh Valley pits Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and state union leader, against Ryan Crosswell, a Marine veteran and former federal prosecutor who resigned from the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section over an order to drop a corruption case against then-New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Brooks has centered his campaign on economic populism, describing himself as a 'working-class candidate' and arguing that 'the whole system is rigged against us.' Crosswell has focused on what he calls the lawlessness of the Trump administration, framing his Justice Department resignation as 'a real No Kings moment' and arguing that corruption is a kitchen-table issue that resonates with voters.
Despite the ideological range between the two candidates, party leaders across the Democratic spectrum have lined up behind Brooks. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro are among those backing the retired firefighter, who would be one of the few House members without a college degree if elected. Democratic operatives say they view Brooks as better positioned to connect with working-class voters on economic concerns, which they expect to dominate the 2026 general election landscape.
The consolidation of establishment and progressive support behind Brooks represents what some Democratic strategists describe as an acknowledgment that the party needs candidates with broader working-class appeal and fewer candidates drawn from legal and professional backgrounds. Andrew Mamo, a spokesperson for The Bench, a Democratic group supporting Brooks, said the backing is 'an admission that we need more normal people and fewer lawyers.' The district is considered one of Pennsylvania's most competitive congressional seats, making the outcome of the primary a potential indicator of the party's strategic direction heading into the midterms.
