Trump and Xi Conclude Two-Day Beijing Summit With Trade Pledges, Iran Assurances and Unresolved Taiwan Tensions
theguardian.com | nbcnews.com | CBS News Colorado

President Donald Trump wrapped up a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, declaring that the two leaders had settled "a lot of different problems" and reached what he described as "fantastic trade deals for both countries." The meetings took place at Zhongnanhai, the Chinese leadership compound, and produced agreements covering agricultural trade, with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer telling Bloomberg TV that a deal involving double-digit billions of dollars in agriculture sales to China was expected as a result of the summit.

Iran emerged as a significant topic at the summit. Trump said he and Xi "feel very similar" on Iran, with both leaders agreeing they do not want Tehran to obtain a nuclear weapon and both expressing a desire to see the Strait of Hormuz — a critical oil shipping chokepoint effectively closed since the U.S.-Iran conflict began in late February — reopened. Trump told Fox News that Xi personally assured him China would not provide military equipment to Iran, calling it "a big statement," though Trump acknowledged Xi also noted China's dependence on Iranian oil imports. The White House formally confirmed that the two leaders had agreed on the importance of keeping the Hormuz strait open.

Taiwan remained a point of divergence. A Chinese readout of the summit indicated Xi warned Trump that mishandling Taiwan could lead to conflict and jeopardize bilateral ties, while a U.S. readout made no mention of Taiwan at all. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he does not believe conflict with China over Taiwan is imminent, saying "We'll be fine," but he declined to say whether a proposed $14 billion U.S. arms package to Taiwan would proceed, stating he would need to consult with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te before making a final decision. Secretary of State Marco Rubio separately told NBC News that U.S. policy on Taiwan had "not changed" and remained consistent across multiple presidential administrations, a statement Taiwan's Foreign Ministry publicly welcomed.

The summit's aftermath is drawing attention from other world capitals. The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to China — expected soon — would offer an opportunity to exchange views on Trump's Beijing meetings, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov noting the significance of dialogue between the world's top two economies. Trump also spoke by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi while en route home to Alaska, a call Japan's government characterized as underscoring the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance amid shifting U.S.-China dynamics. The year-long trade truce between Washington and Beijing is set to expire in October, and Greer indicated both sides have shown willingness to extend it if cooperation continues to prove mutually beneficial.
