Armed man breaches security checkpoint at White House Correspondents' Dinner; Secret Service officer injured
Associated Press | nbcnews.com | Associated Press

An armed man breached a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday evening and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement before being apprehended. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives when he rushed a checkpoint in the lobby of the Washington Hilton at approximately 8:36 p.m. A Secret Service officer was injured in the exchange of gunfire; no other injuries were reported.

President Donald Trump and senior members of his Cabinet and Congress were quickly evacuated from the hotel's ballroom, where the annual dinner was underway. Ahead of the incident, Allen had sent writings to family members displaying anti-Trump sentiment and stating that his targets were administration officials, not hotel guests or employees, according to a senior administration official who spoke to NBC News. Allen's brother notified police in Connecticut after receiving the writings, in which Allen apologized to family and friends but said he did not expect forgiveness.

Allen held a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a master's degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills. A former high school teammate described him as a 'borderline genius' and 'super stable,' calling the incident deeply out of character. Officials said Allen had no criminal record and was not previously on the radar of law enforcement in Washington, D.C.

Investigators believe Allen was able to penetrate the outermost layer of security because he was a registered guest of the hotel, which had been closed to the general public since 2 p.m. The approximately 2,300 ticketed dinner guests were required to pass through multiple additional security layers to enter the ballroom, including magnetometers staffed by the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration. Secret Service Director Sean Curran and Metropolitan Police Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll both argued Saturday that the incident demonstrated that the multi-layered security system functioned as designed.

The shooting is expected to intensify scrutiny of security protocols surrounding the president and high-profile political events, particularly given the venue's significance — the Washington Hilton was the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. The incident comes amid a period of heightened concern over politically motivated violence in the United States. Federal charges against Allen are anticipated, and investigators continue to examine the writings he sent to his family in the hours before the attack.
