Armed Man Opens Fire Outside White House Correspondents' Dinner, Citing Anti-Trump Motive
nbcnews.com | nbcnews.com

An armed California man opened fire outside the White House Correspondents' Association dinner Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump and other administration officials had gathered with journalists for the annual black-tie gala. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, a teacher and engineer, rushed a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun and knives before being shot and tackled to the ground by law enforcement.

Authorities say Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, then on to Washington, D.C., where he checked into the hotel in the days before the attack. Approximately ten minutes before opening fire, Allen sent family members a written note apologizing to his parents, colleagues, students and bystanders, while also outlining what he called his 'expected rules of engagement,' naming Trump administration officials as targets prioritized by rank. He explicitly exempted FBI Director Kash Patel. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the broad outlines of the attack on NBC's 'Meet the Press' on Sunday.

Allen's brother contacted the New London Police Department in Connecticut at approximately 10:49 p.m. Saturday after receiving the note, and was subsequently interviewed by federal authorities. Allen's sister separately told the Secret Service and Montgomery County police that her brother had a history of making radical statements and had referenced a plan to do 'something' to address what he saw as problems in the world. A Bluesky social media account believed to belong to Allen contained recent posts critical of Trump and his administration's policies.

The shooting rapidly spawned a wave of online conspiracy theories, with the word 'staged' trending on X within hours and speculation spreading across Reddit and Instagram. Despite swift, evidence-backed reporting from journalists who attended the event and a clear law enforcement account of events, baseless theories alleging the incident was fabricated spread widely. President Trump himself noted the speed of the speculation in a Sunday interview with CBS's '60 Minutes,' observing that in past incidents it typically took months for such theories to emerge. Experts and commentators across the political spectrum criticized the misinformation, with a White House spokesman calling those who believed Trump staged the attack 'complete morons.'
