Trump Evacuated Unhurt After Armed Suspect Charges Security at White House Correspondents' Dinner; One Officer Shot

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were evacuated Saturday evening from the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton after an armed suspect charged a U.S. Secret Service security checkpoint at the venue. Hundreds of guests, including senior government officials, journalists, and Vice President JD Vance, took cover under tables in the ballroom as Secret Service agents with weapons drawn rushed personnel out of the room. The Secret Service confirmed that Trump and all protectees were unharmed.
The suspect was identified by the Associated Press and multiple outlets as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. Metropolitan Police Department interim chief Jeff Carroll said Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he charged the checkpoint, and that investigators believe he fired at least one shot before being tackled to the ground and handcuffed. A Secret Service officer was struck by gunfire but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover; Allen himself was not shot and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said Allen has been charged with felony firearms and assault offenses.
Trump later briefed reporters at the White House, saying he had spoken with the injured officer and praised the law enforcement response, comparing it favorably to the handling of the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. He announced via Truth Social that the correspondents' dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who said he was within a few feet of the suspect when shots were fired, called into the network to describe witnessing Allen discharge what he described as a "very, very serious weapon."
World leaders issued statements condemning the incident and expressing relief that Trump and other guests were unharmed. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi were among those who responded publicly. The incident is also prompting security reviews ahead of British King Charles III's scheduled state visit to the United States, set to begin approximately 24 hours after the shooting. Senior British government minister Darren Jones told Sky News that "extensive discussions" were underway with U.S. counterparts to assess any impact on operational planning for the visit.
