Madison Academic Diversity Initiative (MADI)

MADI provides JMC students with academic resources, community-building opportunities and mentorship from Madison faculty. Through monthly cohort meetings, one-on-one faculty mentoring, peer support and service, MADI helps students build meaningful connections within JMC. All JMC students are invited to apply by Sept. 14.

Book Talk: City of Lyrics: Ordinary Poets and Islamicate Popular Culture in Early Modern Delhi
Sept. 15, 2:45 p.m. at 303 International Center. Join Nathan L. M. Tabor, associate professor in the Department of History at WMU, for a discussion of his book, which explores the origins of the mushāʿirah, a centuries old tradition of spoken word poetry competitions and its evolution into a global cultural phenomenon. Constitution Day at JMC: Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration for Posterity 
Sept. 15, 5 p.m. in Club Spartan (338 Case Hall). Attend JMC's annual Constitution Day Lecture featuring Dr. Jeremy Bailey, Professor of Humanities at the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida. This year's lecture will explore Thomas Jefferson's views on the Declaration of Independence through his retirement writings and famous letters. Learn more »

CN Forum 2026: Accelerating Innovation through Critical Infrastructure 
Sept. 16, 10 a.m. at the MSU Henry Center. Students are invited to join leaders in business, policy and binational relations for the 2026 CN Forum, hosted by the MSU Canadian Studies Center. "Russian to Polish to Soviet: Vilnius in Two World Wars" with Theodore Weeks 
Sept. 16, 5:45 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Join Theodore R. Weeks, professor of history at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, for a discussion of Vilnius's political and ethnic transformation from approximately 1910 to 1950. The talk will explore how the two World Wars accelerated political change, destruction, migration and ethnic violence as Vilnius transitioned from a provincial capital in the Russian Empire to a Polish city and later the capital of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. What is the “Politics” in the Law/Politics Divide?
Sept. 17, 3:30 p.m. in the Education Wing of the Broad Art Museum. Join MSU College of Law for a lecture featuring Josh Chafetz, this year's Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor. Drawing on his expertise in constitutional law and the separation of powers, Chafetz will examine the assumptions underlying the law/politics divide and what's really at stake when courts, scholars, and citizens draw that line. Info Session: Politics, Culture & Society in Brazil Education Abroad Program 
Sept. 23, 5 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). JMC students are invited to learn more about the Politics, Culture & Society in Brazil education abroad program. Students spend six weeks in Salvador, Brazil, examining the country's domestic and international politics, with a focus on race, ethnicity, class, development, democracy, security and environmental issues. Students earn 8 credits, equivalent to two JMC elective courses. Learn more »

Pathway to Undergraduate Research 
Interested in undergraduate research but not sure where to start? MSU Undergraduate Research offers a free, four-week program with 1-on-1 peer advising, beginning Sept. 28. Register to participate by Sept. 18. 

Become an ASMSU Academic Affairs Delegate
ASMSU is seeking student applicants for academic governance committee opportunities. Represent undergraduate students and help shape decisions that affect academics, student life and the university. Delegates advocate for students, participate in governance, build connections and serve on university committees. View committee opportunities and apply via Google Forms.

Become an MSU Brand Ambassador
Over the next year, University Communications & Marketing is looking for Spartans to include in content, branding and recruitment efforts. This might include participation in a photo session, TV production, videos on campus or contributing to user-generated content in social media. Interested students are invited to complete a brief Qualtrics survey.

JMC’s Advising Center in S328 Case Hall is open daily for express drop-in advising (Friday availability is virtual). Learn more about how to connect with an advisor on JMC’s website.

JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
Victor Léon from MSU Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) is available for drop-in counseling on Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m. in S359 Case Hall. Writing Center at JMC
Need help working through an assignment, essay or presentation? The Writing Center at JMC in 341 Case Hall is open Monday to Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. Students can schedule an appointment via the MSU Writing Center online.

One thing you’d recommend to every JMC student: Take advantage of all the wonderful resources JMC has to offer. I have studied abroad three times (and two of them were through JMC)! Our professors and advising team are truly some of the best people and are always willing to help out. I would not be the person I am today without them, and I am forever grateful!
