People’s Law School 
Sept. 21 through Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m. held at the Henry Center, Lansing. Interested in learning more about practical legal topics? People’s Law School is a seven-session program taught by judges and experienced attorneys, offering an engaging, classroom-style setting for questions and discussion. Internship & Job Opportunities

ASMSU Governmental Affairs Intern 
ASMSU is currently looking for students who are interested in working hands-on as a Governmental Affairs Intern (first-year and sophomore students highly encouraged to apply). Gain experience in the governmental field while having the ability to impact a broader audience that supports over 50,000 students across campus. Unpaid part-time opportunity (expected schedule of six hours per week). Apply by Sept. 11 via Handshake.

MSU Center for Survivors SACI Volunteer Training 
The MSU Center for Survivors is accepting applications for its Fall 2026 Survivor Advocacy & Crisis Intervention (SACI) Volunteer training class. SACI volunteers gain knowledge about sexual and relationship violence, develop crisis-intervention skills, and provide essential support and advocacy to the MSU campus and greater Lansing community. The 40-hour hybrid training includes online self study and four in-person sessions. Volunteers set their own schedules and are asked to complete two on-call shifts per month. Learn more and apply by Sept. 13 via MSU Center for Survivors.

Political Field Organizer Opportunities 
The Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters is hiring political field organizers to conduct voter outreach on targeted races throughout the state of Michigan. The position pays $30/hour, with flexible hours and schedules based on organizers' availability. Canvassing will take place four times per week from now through the November election. Internships Spotlight: Renna Robinson

Renna Robinson is a JMC junior majoring in Social Relations & Policy. Below she shares her experience interning with the District Court of Maryland this summer.

Internship with the District Court of Maryland, District 6 Montgomery County in Rockville, MD
Major: Social Relations & Policy
Minors: Business, Women’s and Gender Studies
Expected Graduation Year: 2028

What are some of your regular responsibilities during your internship? I prepared bond and protective/peace order dockets by reviewing case histories, police reports and court records, and identifying the information most relevant to the judge. I also observed court proceedings and assisted with urgent research involving legal motions and procedural issues.    

What kind of legal issues or public problems does your internship focus on? My internship focused on civil and criminal law and the day-to-day work of the court system. Through trials, hearings and other proceedings, I saw how courts balance public safety, due process and the fair administration of justice.

Which skills from JMC showed up most clearly in your internship? Critical thinking and analysis are skills I used every day. Whether I was researching legal rules and applying them to motions or thinking through the strengths and weaknesses of an argument, JMC has helped me approach complex problems thoughtfully and from multiple perspectives.

Was there a JMC course, assignment, professor or discussion that helped prepare you for this work? Prof. Rojo’s classes pushed me to be a more precise writer. Learning how to communicate complex ideas clearly and include only the most relevant information has been incredibly helpful when preparing case materials and summaries for the judge.

How did the experience shape your interest in law school or legal work? This experience strengthened my interest in law by showing me how legal analysis shapes real-world decisions. It confirmed that I enjoy the research, problem-solving and attention to detail that legal work requires, while giving me a deeper appreciation for the impact lawyers and judges have on the lives of others!
