This is a very short and quick update on something that I’ve been involved with this whole year and that, quite honestly, has been and is one of the best things I’ve even been involved with. The date is approaching and I thought I’d share what we’ve been cooking up…
I hope to see librarians, teachers, fans, readers of all kinds at MAKE, the new comics festival coming to Melbourne. The full program is out now and I'm super proud of being involved in the creation of MAKE, the Melbourne Alternative Comics Expo. The first edition of this comics festival will be taken place the second weekend of October and we have an incredible line up of creators from all over Australia.
It's wonderful to be part of the organising committee with a vision to make this an inclusive festival that welcomes everyone, from seasoned professionals to young creators making their first comics, photocopying them and stapling them together. In fact, as part of making it inclusive and open to everyone, apart from the opening gala which is still a very affordable $15, the whole festival is free. Totally free.
Tickets for the first night opening gala Friday October 9 at the Wheeler Centre are already out with a whole bunch of creators including Rachel Ang, Eloise Grills, Mandy Ord, Joshua Santospirito, Bailey Sharp and Shaun Tan performing live readings of their comics, hosted by Aaron Billings. Saturday October 10 we move to the RMIT library in the CBD for a wide range of panels on topics such as Melbourne in Comics, how to find an agent, editing comics, going from webcomics to print, making non-fiction comics and Campbell Whyte and Shaun Tan, two of the greatest Australian comics creators in conversation with each other. Bookings will be required for this day and we'll have them on our website soon.
Finally, Sunday October 11 we'll be moving to the Kensington Town Hall for our big market day with 120+ creators tabling and selling their comics. The day will also include workshops and an exhibition.
MAKE is coming and we hope that everyone embraces it. Comics lovers of all types and all backgrounds. Whether you're a fan, a comics creator, a librarian, a teacher... there will be plenty for everyone.
