The Fed board contradicts itself: 86% no cuts, 57% hike
Wednesday, August 12, 2026 · Edition 1
Two of today's markets sit inside a foot of each other and still can't agree. The Fed board prices an 86% chance of no cuts this year and a 57% chance of a hike, which leaves a hike-then-hold year as the quiet reconciliation nobody wants to say out loud. Meanwhile the biggest faller on the board is a war that stopped happening.
💵 Macro
Fed rate hike in 2026?
At 56.5%, down 2 points on the month, the hike market is a near coin flip. The tension is with its neighbor: "no cuts in 2026" sits at 85.9%. Both cannot be casual reads of the same Fed. An 86% chance of zero cuts alongside a 57% chance of a hike implies the board is pricing a real path to a hike-then-hold, or a hike-only, year. The third-most-traded market on the board, and the disagreement is internal.
Will annual inflation be 3.3% in July?
At 44.5%, this resolves tomorrow on a single BLS print, and it is almost a coin flip on one exact decimal. Volume today ran 4.2x its weekly average, the sharpest spike on the board relative to its own norm. Pair the 44.5% with the 56.5% hike odds and you get the uncomfortable middle: inflation priced as sticky enough to matter, not hot enough to settle the Fed argument next door.
🌍 Geopolitics
Iran full airspace closure by August 31?
At 9.5%, this is the single biggest mover on the board, down 24.5 points in a month. The day-to-day drift is tiny (10.5% to 9.5%), but the monthly collapse is the story: escalation priced as a live scenario in July, priced as a fading one now. When your top repricer is a closure that keeps not arriving, that is the tension worth holding against every ceasefire market still trading above zero.
🎬 Culture
Will Kai and Speed beat the Minecraft challenge by August 17?
At 29.5%, up 10 points since last covered, the hardcore Minecraft market moved while the stream itself was the news. Volume ran 2.4x its weekly average, the second-most-traded market on the board. A no-death run against the Ender Dragon, the Wither, the Warden and the Elder Guardian on one seed still leans hard No at 70.5%, but a 10-point revision inside a settled challenge window is a lot of motion for a coin-flip video game.
Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day gross $800M-$900M domestic by August 31?
At 33%, the market leans against the middle. A related market for clearing $900M was recently covered at 57.9%, so the board is effectively saying the film is likelier to overshoot the top of this band than to land inside it. The narrow window is the trap: box office is a distribution, and this one is priced to skip the fat part.
The clearest signal today is not any single price but a disagreement the board keeps to itself: a Fed that supposedly won't cut and might hike, and a war that quietly stopped being priced.
