BOJ moves, the Fed waits: two rate clocks diverge

Wednesday, September 2, 2026 · Edition 1

Two central banks, two directions. Traders now price a BOJ move in September at near-certainty while betting the Fed holds all year, then hikes. That is not one global rate story. It is two, pointed opposite ways, and this edition is mostly about markets that quietly disagree with each other.

💵 Macro

Will the Bank of Japan announce no change at the September 2026 meeting?

At 1.1%, "no change" has collapsed from roughly 58% a month ago, the second-biggest move on the board (down 58 points). Volume ran 4.2x its weekly average. The board now treats a September BOJ move as all but certain, which is the interesting part next to the American picture: a tightening Japan against a Fed the board expects to sit still.

Fed rate hike in 2026?

At 71.5%, the board leans toward a Fed hike this year, and it is the third most-traded market on the board. Read alongside the near-certain BOJ move, the two prices sketch different tempos: Japan acting now, the US drifting toward a hike later in the year. Same direction, wildly different clocks.

🌍 Geopolitics

Putin meets with Iranian officials by August 31?

At 99.9%, this is the single biggest mover on the board, up 70 points in a month on 6x its weekly volume. The price is effectively settled, so the settlement is not the story. The repricing is: a market that was a coin-flip weeks ago snapped to near-certainty, and it sits against a board still pricing Iran risk as cooling.

Iran full airspace closure by September 30?

At 9.5%, an airspace closure has fallen 19 points in a month, the board leaning hard toward calm. Here is the tension: the same board that just repriced a Putin-Iran meeting to near-certain treats an Iran shock as increasingly unlikely, and it does so while trading 2.9x its weekly average. Elevated flow, falling odds. One of those is telling the truth.

⚙️ Tech

Will NVIDIA be the largest company in the world by market cap on December 31?

At 75.5%, up 21 points in a month, this is the fourth-biggest mover on the board. A month ago NVIDIA holding the crown through year-end was a closer call. Now the board leans firmly toward durable dominance, not a passing spike, and it paired the surge with the Astra move to reprice AI supremacy across two horizons at once.

→ Polymarket

Will OpenAI's Astra model be released by September 3, 2026?

At 73% to ship by tomorrow, Astra is priced as more likely than not against a deadline with no room to slip. Volume ran 6.8x its weekly average on a market that has not moved in a month. Flat price, loud flow, and a resolution date that will settle the argument within a day.

→ Polymarket

The board can hold two rate stories at once and two Iran stories at once. The discipline is noticing which pairs cannot both be right.
