Game Dev Blog #6 - Project Lion
Hello, and happy September! The heat of summer is finally behind us, but that doesn’t mean things have cooled off at Grundislav Games! So let’s get right into it.
Project Lion
Development
I have now finished building Chapter 3 and am currently working on Chapter 4, which I hope to have done before the end of the month. This means two things:
The game is half built (which is good)
There are as many months remaining in the year as chapters left to build. This could potentially be a good thing, since it means I could reasonably have the full game built and playable by the end of the year. Whether or not I accomplish tat goal remains to be seen, but it’s what I’m aiming for.
Last month I talked about how I had a lot of spinning plates heading towards my official announcement and Steam page launch in November, and I focused on talking about the music. This month I want to talk about:
Marketing
I’m happy to reveal that I’ve hired a marketing and PR company to help out with the very important task of…marketing and PR!
I’m working with Acorn Games Advertising, led by a lovely fellow named George Eastmead, who I met at AdventureX a few years ago. George and his team have worked on several games (most importantly several point & click adventure games) so I feel like mine is in excellent hands.
We’ve already had some great discussions about how to approach marketing, as well as getting some advice for my announcement trailers. Yes, trailers plural.
During one of our talks, I realized that announcing the game at AdventureX is actually incredibly easy, because people there are already familiar with adventure games, giving me the luxury to be able to be a little more self-indulgent with the presentation of the trailer. Not so with Steam, where I’m advertising to people who will look at the page and immediately click away if their attention isn’t grabbed within 3 seconds. Thus, the need for two trailers. Of course, I’m working smart, not hard, so both will feature the same footage, just slightly different edits.
I’ve also commissioned they key art for the game, which is coming along very nicely. I’m really excited to debut it, especially because it’s being done by not only a very talented artist, but also a close friend. We haven’t worked together in a long time, so this is a welcome collaboration. Here is a tiny preview of someone’s ear.
