This week in Greenwich: a Grammy winner playing Latin jazz at the Point, new digging at the Battle of Ridgefield, and an e-bike ordinance headed for a vote

The Historical Society has a working archaeologist in on Thursday to say what the ground at Ridgefield has actually turned up, and some of it does not match the story everyone has been telling. Sunday brings a Grammy winner to Greenwich Point for the Tides and Tunes series, free, under the trees. And the e-bike ordinance that has occupied three neighborhoods all summer gets its second read on August 13.

The Battle of Ridgefield, April 27, 1777: An Archaeological Lecture with Dr. Kevin McBride at the Greenwich Historical Society, 47 Strickland Road (Cos Cob), 6:30 PM, with light refreshments from 5:30. McBride is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Connecticut and the former director of research at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, and he is bringing artifacts recovered from the battlefield along with evidence that cuts against some long held assumptions about how the day went. There is a question and answer session after. This is part of the Society's America's 250th lecture series, sponsored by the Ridgefield Historical Society through a National Park Service grant. $55 members, $60 non-members, adults, indoors. Sips and Serenades at the Museum: Cocktails and Classical Violin at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive. Ticketed, adults, indoors. Details.

Walk the Distance at Cos Cob Park, 111 River Road (Cos Cob). Free, all ages, outdoors. Details.

Forest Walk with Dr. Neil Pederson at Mianus River Park, Cognewaugh Road entrance (Cos Cob), 9 to 10 AM. An hour in the woods with a tree ring scientist, which is a considerably different walk than the one you take on your own. Free, adults, outdoors. Details.

Y through the Ages: Timeline Installation at the YWCA, 6 to 10 AM, with free coffee. All ages, indoors. Details.

The dirt bike ordinance gets its second read on August 13, and the fines go up to $2,000. Captain Patrick Smyth of the Greenwich Police Department brought a draft ordinance to the Board of Selectmen on July 23 after complaints from Cos Cob near the post office and East Putnam Avenue, Old Greenwich around Sound Beach, Armstrong Court, West Putnam Avenue, and Pemberwick. Selectwoman Lauren Rabin raised what has been happening in underground parking. Housing Authority board chair Sam Romeo called the First Selectman's radio show to back it. State Public Act 25-80 lets towns fine up to $1,000 for a first violation, $1,500 for a second, and $2,000 after that, and permits seizure and forfeiture of the vehicle. Anything over 3,500 watts is already legally a motorcycle, which means a license, registration, and insurance. Two Board of Education members resigned, and the replacements get picked in late August. Board chair Michael-Joseph Mercanti-Anthony and member Wendy Vizzo Walsh, both Republicans, stepped down, and neither has said why. Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones said the remaining board members will vote on replacements as soon as possible after August 26. Early voting for the August 11 primary runs through Sunday at Town Hall. Democrats choose a nominee for governor between Gov. Ned Lamont, who lives here, and State Rep. Josh Elliott of Hamden. Republicans pick a candidate for the U.S. House. Early voting is 10 AM to 6 PM through August 9 at Greenwich Town Hall, and polls are open 6 AM to 8 PM on election day. Source: Greenwich Free Press.

Tides and Tunes: the Reinaldo DeJesus Latin Jazz Experience at Greenwich Point Park, 4 PM, under the trees just past the original concession stand. DeJesus won the 2025 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album for Cubop Lives!, and the Puerto Rican percussionist has played the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the pit of Broadway's FELA! before this. Friends of Greenwich Point runs the series and the concert is free, though the usual Greenwich Point admission rules apply, so sort out the pass before you drive down. Bring a picnic. If it rains it moves indoors to Bosco's Bar and Grill, 148 Sound Beach Avenue (Old Greenwich). Free, all ages, outdoors. Details.
