Being Seen

I just got done with a weekend of training, and because of the nature of the work we’re doing, I found myself speaking in a group of people about things that are really close to my heart.

And it’s vulnerable.

Even though the people are really kind, and I’ve grown to know my cohort over the past year, there’s something vulnerable about letting yourself be seen.

It makes me think about the people who show up in the spaces I offer.

It’s so brave to show up and share. To be uncertain, figuring things out, finding your way. And let people in on that.

I think sometimes we imagine that we need to have ourselves figured out before we can let ourselves be seen.

But what I’m finding is that being seen is part of how we find our way home to ourselves.

We can have an inner sense of who we are, but there’s something different about beginning to live from that place—to let what we experience in here (points to chest) make its way out there (motions to the world).

That’s part of how we embody who we are.

And it’s vulnerable work! Work that can feel uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable, because it can bring up feelings of shame, unworthiness, not enoughness, etc.

This might manifest in how you talk to yourself, a physical sensation of shrinking back, or a posture of needing to perform or prove yourself.

We might find ourselves being self-critical or feeling like we want to leave the group.

And maybe these are some of the feelings that have kept us in hiding.

But maybe turning toward the love and acceptance from the group is part of the path to freedom.

So if you’ve been brave enough to let yourself be seen lately, I hope you’ll remember to be gentle with yourself.

And keep coming back to love.

With love,
