Day 145. Washington has found a way to make escalation sound administratively tidy: one Iranian attack on a ship in Hormuz, one Iranian bridge or power plant destroyed. The math fits on a bar napkin. Deciding what can lawfully be destroyed doesn’t.
The US military completed its 11th consecutive night of airstrikes early Wednesday, while Iran’s return fire kept the exchange alive. Trump’s formula assigns each turn a number but offers neither side an exit. A limit on each response is not a limit on the war.
Bridges and power plants can be lawful military objectives. But the judgment has to begin with what the object is doing, not with a quota waiting to be filled. If the chosen object is civilian, that’s not deterrence; it’s a war crime dressed as bookkeeping. Keep the receipt. At $37.5 billion, the Pentagon can pick up this round.

Iran Answers the Eleventh Night With Drones at US Bases in Three Countries
The eleventh consecutive night of US strikes ran about 75 minutes and reached deeper into the country — explosions reported in Tabriz, Tehran, Bushehr and Khuzestan, with CENTCOM listing operations centers, hangars, drone storage and logistics. Iran’s reply came by sunrise: claimed Arash one-way drone strikes on Al Azraq air base in Jordan and Sheikh Isa in Bahrain, a day after Kuwait intercepted a wave of its own — the counterpunch still aimed at the hosts of American power rather than American soil. The mediators’ 10-day truce sits unanswered a third day; Rubio says Washington will talk but calls Tehran “not serious,” Tehran sent its interior minister to Islamabad to keep the channel alive, and Trump named the next target out loud — Pickaxe Mountain, the centrifuge complex under rock near Natanz, which Iran insists holds nothing nuclear.

Equities are holding their nerve: the S&P recovered 0.9% to 7,509 Tuesday, futures eased overnight, and Alphabet, Tesla and IBM report after Wednesday’s close.
