The Morning Five
1. Abhimanyu Mishra closed the Skalica Masters with a win over Alexandr Fier (2566) and shares first place on 5.5/9. The r/chess standings thread carrying the result is the only press confirmation in today's wire; Mishra, #2 on the under-21 list, was the lone American in the nine-day Slovak event our relay carried at an average of 2616. Elsewhere abroad, Andrew Hong drew Vasyl Ivanchuk (2634) in the Spanish Primera División at Linares, Irina Krush beat IM Carles Diaz Camallonga (2493) at the Sants open in Barcelona, and Ronald Hernandez Placeres (2060) beat FM Ronniel Ramirez Cabreja (2311) at the Panama Open. (r/chess, Junior Watch and Americans in Action sections)
2. Alireza Firouzja won the Sofia Cup blitz alone on 9.5/11, undefeated, with Ediz Gurel and Rauf Mamedov half a point back — after Mamedov had taken the rapid on tiebreak from Firouzja and Dimitris Alexakis, all three on 7.5/9. The two-day Balkan championships closed today; Brandon Jacobson, the only American in the field, went 5-4 in the blitz including a win over Sanan Sjugirov (2586) — the facts block carries Jacobson at 2517, which supersedes the 2626 in our presence table and settles the discrepancy this brief flagged yesterday. (The Week in Chess, r/chess, Jacobson–Sjugirov, Firouzja–Mamedov)
3. World Chess's Olympiad guide puts the United States first on the provisional Open starting list — and names Hans Niemann as a debutant on the squad, the first US player attached to Samarkand in any of our inputs after eleven days of watching. The same guide settles the date spread this brief has carried since 08-28: opening ceremony September 15, play from the 16th, eleven rounds with a rest day on the 22nd, final round September 27 — which makes the 15-27 and 16-27 variants ceremony-versus-play readings of one schedule and leaves our own calendar's 15-28 as the outlier. It also confirms Magnus Carlsen will not play for Norway and that the FIDE Council's eligibility ruling means no Russian team. (World Chess)
4. At the Green Hills Resort Masters rapid in Uzbekistan, three juniors beat three 2694-plus grandmasters in one relay day: Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus (b.2011, 2492) beat Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2706), Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov (b.2009, 2415) beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2694), and Mukhiddin Madaminov (2497) beat Vladislav Artemiev (2709). Erdogmus is the Turkish prodigy the Times of India reports joining Viswanathan Anand and Arjun Erigaisi at PBG Alaskan Knights when the Global Chess League opens September 5. (Erdogmus–Abdusattorov, Suyarov–Mamedyarov, Madaminov–Artemiev, The Times of India)
News Overview
| • The Olympiad file thickened from three directions, and the US squad question now has a name in it. World Chess's guide names Niemann on a US team it seeds first, calls India's title defence and Uzbekistan's home campaign the other headline contenders, and notes Gukesh and Sindarov could meet across an India–Uzbekistan match two months before Geneva — a single source for the Niemann claim, with nothing from US Chess itself in our inputs (World Chess). The state-visit coverage continues: Modi's Tashkent remarks on the Gukesh–Sindarov match and his good wishes for Samarkand reach us as one ANI account at two outlets (The News Mill, irishsun.com), dating the match by its November 24–December 12 playing span, consistent with the approved regulations. And Israel's Olympiad preparation is visible in Afula: the fuller Ynetnews account of Ilya Smirin's blitz title, carried here Saturday, adds that the national team broke from a Netanya training camp to use the event as a tune-up, and that 14-year-old Eliran Shilon Rahav's fifth place doubled as the under-18 title (Ynetnews). A Daily Investor headline — an internet billionaire in a South African coastal village who "can become the most powerful man in chess" — is presidential-race coverage by shape, but no article body reached us and the candidate is unidentified in our inputs (Daily Investor). | • Chess.com is expanding beyond chess, and Europe's club game got a new top tier. The Verge reports the company's Gambit poker site, in beta since May, holds its first livestreamed event today with Danny Rensch and Alexandra Botez; chief growth officer Albert Cheng pledges no real-money play ever, describes an Elo-style rating system feeding the same subscription model as Chess.com, says go, backgammon and mahjong sites are in development, and credits AI-assisted coding with letting a two-person team build the platform in under a year (The Verge). The ECU announced the European Chess Superleague: eight elite club teams, a seven-round robin in Bucharest February 2-10, 2027, six boards a side, and a minimum €300,000 fund it calls the largest in European club chess history, €110,000 to the winner, with entry via the European Club Cup's top four, rating, a host team and two 2600-average wildcards (European Chess Union). One consumer-marketing line: an ITC noodle brand's contest, closing September 2, sends 25 teenage winners to meet and play Carlsen, Humpy and Divya Deshmukh (MediaBrief). |
• Anand gave the Times of India two interviews, and one carries a judgment that will travel: "at the moment, I would say he's the number one player in the world" — on Praggnanandhaa. That is an assessment, not a list position — the No. 6/8/12 ranking splits this brief has been tracking stay open — and Anand grounds it in the pattern of late-game comebacks at Norway Chess and across the GCT month (The Times of India). The companion piece has Anand on the business of the game — the biggest thing chess can learn from cricket, he says, is obtaining and retaining sponsors — plus his read on the Olympiad (leave board order to captain Srinath) and on Gukesh's form (The Times of India). The GCT-win syndication tail continues at Singapore's tabla and elsewhere — one agency account, counted once (tabla.com.sg).
• The Saint Louis autumn now has a second full source: ChessBase's Clutch Chess report matches chess.com's on every number and adds the history. Kasparov–Topalov runs September 11-13, twelve chess960 games — two rapid and two blitz daily, a new starting position drawn each day — under Maurice Ashley's escalating scoring, with drawn-game bonuses rolling forward so the final 5+3 blitz game could theoretically carry the full $24,000 bonus pool; Kasparov beat Anand 13-11 in the same format last year, and Topalov beat Kasparov in their 2018 Chess960 match. The piece also confirms the October 27-29 Champions Showdown field — Sindarov, Praggnanandhaa, Caruana, Nakamura — putting the club's programme on record twice over. (ChessBase)
• Klaudia Kulon won the Menchik Memorial in London with a round to spare, on 7/8 after eight rounds against pursuers at 5.5 and 5. The tenth-player field is the event our relay carried for seven days; Andreea-Marioara Cosman won the last-round duel with Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant to move up the podium behind Kulon and Cecile Haussernot. The German-interest angle doubles as women's-circuit material: Lara Schulze, the second seed, finished sixth at a 2161 performance and again missed the WGM norm she says she regularly hits everywhere except norm events — she now heads to Samarkand with Germany's women's squad. (ChessBase, chessbase-de)
Coverage note: both the FIDE player-list and US Chess membership feeds failed, so this edition may be missing that data; 9 story candidates were suppressed as repeats or duplicates; chess.com events and untiered personal Lichess relays are not covered.
