The Morning Five
1. FIDE has moved the Gukesh–Sindarov world championship match forward by three days, and its own host announcement still carries the old dates. The match regulations approved by the FIDE Council on August 23 put the match at November 22–December 13 in Geneva, with Game 1 on November 24, tiebreaks December 12 and players due in the city November 20 — where FIDE's Geneva announcement said November 25–December 15; World Chess found the change in the regulations rather than in any FIDE statement. The same regulations set a $2.5 million fund paid as $200,000 per classical win with the remainder split ($1.3m/$1.2m if it goes to tiebreaks), and name Anish Giri as first reserve and Fabiano Caruana as second. (World Chess, World Chess)
2. The Grand Chess Tour is changing leadership: Alex Onischuk succeeds Michael Khodarkovsky as executive director. The tour's own release on Praggnanandhaa's title says Khodarkovsky retires after 11 years and that Onischuk takes over as the 2027 season begins, with events again in Romania, Poland, Croatia and the United States and the Finals moving to São Paulo, Brazil. (Business Wire via FinancialContent)
3. St. Louis announced two more events: Kasparov–Topalov for $144,000 in September, and a four-player Sindarov showdown in October. Clutch Chess: The Legends runs September 11–13 at the Saint Louis Chess Club — 12 Chess960 games over three days, winner $70,000, runner-up $50,000, $24,000 in per-game bonuses — against the opponent who beat Kasparov in his last rated classical game in 2005. A Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown on October 27–29 pairs Sindarov with Praggnanandhaa, Caruana and Nakamura, framed as the challenger's last outing before Geneva. (Chess.com)
| 4. Brandon Jacobson and Andrew Hong took the day's two best American results, both abroad. Jacobson beat Alexander Motylev (2588) in the Sofia Cup rapid, the highest-rated decisive game in our file; Hong held Shamsiddin Vokhidov (2655) to a draw in round 3 of the Spanish Primera División in Linares, the day's strongest event (~2639). German ChessBase's round-2 report had Hong at 2/2 on board one for Granada, while the English round-3 report has Solvay, with Ivanchuk leading, alone on six match points — the two ChessBase reports cover different rounds of the same team event, not conflicting accounts. | News Overview |
• The championship match is now a scheduling story as much as a chess one, and the two players are preparing in opposite ways. Beyond the moved dates and the per-win prize formula, Sindarov told The New Indian Express the match will be the hardest event of his life and that he does not know whether a second chance will come; he is staying in play — the Global Chess League in Bengaluru from September 5, then the Olympiad for Uzbekistan — and only starts a dedicated camp in October, while Gukesh has been off the circuit since the Chennai Grand Masters. Both are expected in Samarkand, where India and Uzbekistan could meet weeks before Geneva (The New Indian Express, World Chess). Ratings cited by the Indian daily have Sindarov world No. 4 at 2777.9 and Gukesh No. 32 at 2703.
| • World Chess published a full field guide to the September 26 FIDE election, including an on-the-record allegation that votes are bought. Three tickets stand — Timur Turlov with Viswanathan Anand, Wadim Rosenstein with Gordon Tang, Jan Henric Buettner with Malcolm Pein — under one-federation-one-vote among roughly 200 members, with a three-way debate moderated by Maurice Ashley on September 9. World Chess counts publicly identifiable backing of at least 12 federations for Rosenstein, nine for Turlov and eight for Buettner, and quotes Buettner saying "The price for a vote is $40,000 in Europe, $5,000 in Africa," alongside his pledge to distribute 20% of FIDE revenue (prize funds excluded) to federations; Rosenstein has asked the Electoral Commission to examine Turlov's eligibility, and Turlov's side has threatened legal action over defamation claims (World Chess). Campaign money is visible at event level too: the WR Bughouse Open in Quezon City, won by Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Marc Christian Nazario for ₱100,000, was backed by Rosenstein's WR Chess (Manila Bulletin, PhilBoxing). | • American commercial chess had a busy Saturday: two St. Louis announcements, a 65th Nakamura arena title, and Levy Rozman joining an esports organization. Nakamura won Bullet Brawl for the 65th time and the 16th time this year, scoring 51/65 for 170 points and finishing 23 points clear, with Nihal Sarin second (Chess.com). German ChessBase reports that GothamChess has been named head of chess at BASILISK, the esports organization whose roster already includes Vincent Keymer and Anish Giri; the release puts his YouTube following at 8 million and the organization's total reach above 20 million, with a second book out October 6 and a five-city European tour from October 25 (ChessBase Deutschland). [RESPONSE?] |
• Two US open-tournament stories from local press, both member-facing. Glendale hosts the Southern California Open September 4–7 at the Hilton Los Angeles North with seven sections and a $60,000 guaranteed fund plus a $2,000 blitz on the final day; the city's mayor is publicly promoting it after more than 300 players attended last year's debut (Outlook Newspapers). Abilene Christian University held its first Abilene Open on Saturday, a four-round Swiss run with the Texas Chess Association's Region 9 director (KTXS).
• Chess-in-schools and access stories cluster, with one of them following up a thread from Friday. ChessBase now carries the Kurdistan Region initiative we flagged Saturday from Iraqi outlets, adding detail: chess is in the Grades 7–9 program, a 15-page section sits in the official physical-education teacher's guide, and 150 Erbil teachers completed a week-long course (ChessBase). In Malawi, a tobacco-sector sponsorship worth K37 million extends after-school chess to 10 more rural schools and about 600 pupils, on top of 34 schools since 2021, while the Chess Association of Malawi says it lacks funds to send its 13-person Olympiad delegation to Uzbekistan (AfricaBrief, Malawi24). Abu Dhabi's festival reports over 2,400 entrants in its 32nd edition as the UAE prepares to host the 2028 Olympiad (Gulf News), and a syndicated feature on girls in chess reports from the Mindsports Super Swiss in London — the same event where Maximillian Lu is playing — citing FIDE and University of Queensland research on rising female participation (Currently.com). One line of context elsewhere: Jamaica's Joshua Christie earned a second IM norm by winning a nine-round international at home (Jamaica Gleaner).
Coverage note: the US Chess membership feed and the FIDE player list both failed, so this edition carries no membership or rating-list data; 13 story candidates were suppressed as repeats or duplicates.
