♙First Look Chess Digest
Tuesday, September 01, 2026 · US Chess staff brief · Edition No. 16
The Morning Five
1. The September FIDE rating list is out, and it is an American story at both ends: Wesley So is back in the world's top five for the first time since October 2022, and Alice Lee's first GM norm is now in the official record with a $100,000 bonus attached to the chase. So gained nine points from his Sinquefield Cup victory to reach No. 5, and Hikaru Nakamura reclaimed No. 2 after Fabiano Caruana shed points in the same event; Lee's Cairns Cup performance of 2623 (+23, to 2453) came with a single loss to Stavroula Tsolakidou, and chess.com pairs her with Carissa Yip (+9, to 2468) — both pursuing the GM title with Jeanne Cairns Sinquefield offering $100,000 to whoever gets there. German ChessBase places Lee fourth on the girls' world list. (chess.com, chessbase-de)
2. US Chess published its roundup of the 2026 Delegates Meeting rules actions: one major change — the correspondence chess chapter was rewritten wholesale — plus a docket of items with multi-year reach. Tim Just's column reports that chapter 9 was modernized from Michael Buss's revision and approved by the Delegates, with a start date announcement to follow; the Rules Committee will bring reworked electronic-device language (rule 20N, prompted by smart glasses) to next year's convention; the Executive Board is charged with studying full online publication of the rulebook, including the revenue and contract questions; and a motion changing rated time controls that would have affected dual ratings failed. (US Chess)
3. Nodirbek Yakubboev won the Green Hills Resort Masters in Uzbekistan by half a point over Nodirbek Abdusattorov — holding on through a blitz day in which he placed sixth of eight. The two-day format scored one day of rapid at double value, and Yakubboev's 6/7 rapid built a three-point cushion that survived even Abdusattorov winning the blitz section and taking their individual game; Artemiev finished third, and Mamedyarov was last in the rapid and seventh in the blitz. The relay's top result: Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, the 2011-born Turk who tops the new junior world list, beat Abdusattorov (2818 blitz) in round three. (The Week in Chess, r/chess)
4. TWIC #1660 arrived with 9,139 games from 52 events, putting authoritative names and game files behind a week of American online results our broadcast coverage never saw. The weekly file confirms Jeffery Xiong's 10.5/11 run in the second 3+0 Thursday event — a point and a half clear of the field — alongside Logan Shafer (2328) beating Le Quang Liem (2732) in the third event, and carries the August 25 Titled Tuesday, where Jan-Krzysztof Duda edged Arjun Erigaisi on tiebreak at 9.5/11 in a 1,998-game file with 197 US-flagged players. Brandon Jacobson's loss to Alireza Firouzja in the Sofia Cup blitz is also in the week's record. (Titled Tuesday results, 3-0 Thursday, TWIC Weekly section)
5. FIDE's Electoral Commission approved the candidate lists for this month's elections — and made one vice-presidential candidacy conditional on the candidate disclosing a criminal conviction in her application. The commission's August 30 report covers the four Elected Vice President seats, a Constitutional Commission vacancy and the Zonal President posts, and requires Martha Fierro Baquero to amend her filing to include a national court conviction for international abduction of a minor, carrying a sentence of two and a half years. Several zones produced no valid candidates and may receive an extended deadline to September 10; FIDE separately published the list of member federations holding voting rights at the Samarkand Congress. (FIDE, FIDE)
News Overview
• The rest of the rating list reads as a St. Louis after-action report, and India's month dominates it. Praggnanandhaa's Grand Chess Tour title carried him past Arjun Erigaisi as Indian No. 1 and back into the world top 10, having been No. 17 as recently as May (chess.com); World Chess gives Anand's assessment from yesterday's Times of India interview its own write-up — "at the moment, I would say he's the number one player in the world" — grounded in Pragg's late-tournament finishing (World Chess). On the women's side, Tan Zhongyi's Cairns Cup win lifted her to No. 6 and Ju Wenjun regained No. 2, while 14-year-old Modipalli Deekshitha's 297-point single-month gain put her in the women's top 25 (chessbase-de); Armenpress counts seven Armenian GMs on the list and notes Levon Aronian — now a US player — at No. 20 (Armenpress).
• The Samarkand and Geneva buildup both moved: the Olympiad schedule is now official, and the US squad question enters its second day unanswered. FIDE's announced schedule — opening ceremony September 15, eleven rounds September 16–27, rest day the 22nd, final round starting at 11 a.m. local — matches yesterday's reading and confirms our own calendar's 15–28 span as the outlier; India named both defending squads, with Gukesh on the Open team and Humpy leading the women (Sportstar). Humpy's own interview is candid pre-Olympiad material: a year in which "nothing went according to my plans," sleepless nights after her Candidates withdrawal over the venue security dispute, and a broad hint that she expects board one (The Times of India). On Geneva, Modi's state-visit remark reaches another outlet (Sportscape Magazine) and CNBC TV18 re-relays Sindarov's New Indian Express interview — the same interview already carried here twice, now adding that Roman Vidonyak runs his opening preparation (CNBC TV18). Nothing from US Chess yet on the Niemann-inclusive squad World Chess named yesterday, with the opening ceremony two weeks out. [RESPONSE?]
• The presidential race produced a Russian-aligned endorsement and two more campaign-supplied placements. Pavel Kolobkov — Olympic fencing champion and former Russian sports minister — confirmed to the Russian federation's site that Belarus, Cuba and Tajikistan nominated him for FIDE Vice President, and endorsed Timur Turlov's platform as "the most comprehensive," backing Olympic-programme ambitions for chess (ruchess). The day's two Turlov profiles are campaign-sourced: FinanceFeeds marks its piece as sponsored content outright, and the Cyprus Mail item closes with the campaign's URL — both usable for platform detail (Freedom Holding's $15m/year on chess, the ChessBase acquisition, the digital-infrastructure pitch), neither as independent reporting (FinanceFeeds, cyprus-mail.com). Debate September 9, vote September 26. [RESPONSE?]
• The autumn elite calendar and the platform business each added a layer. World Chess's Total Chess explainer confirms that Gukesh, Sindarov and Nakamura all qualified for Budapest invitations and none will play — the champion and challenger because the pilot ends days before their Geneva match — while eight of the world's top 10 remain in the November 10–21 field, playing 45+30 "Fast Classic" groups scored 3-1-0 (World Chess). German ChessBase becomes the third source on Kasparov–Topalov (September 11–13, $144,000, escalating Clutch scoring) and re-confirms the October 27–29 Champions Showdown field (chessbase-de); Nakamura plays Ferrari's Charles Leclerc today in Monza at Se!ze, the F1 driver's chess-inspired game — Nakamura built himself an online version to prepare (ChessBase). The Global Chess League named 8Bit Creatives its broadcast producer for Bengaluru (September 5–13), promising 30-plus cameras and the league's first separate English and Hindi feeds (MediaNews4U, indianbroadcastingworld.com). Chess.com's Gambit poker spin-off drew a second day of tech-press coverage, with Gizmodo highlighting that a two-person team built it largely with AI coding and that go and backgammon are next (Gizmodo, SecNews.gr), while the site also added Mittens to its coach roster (chess.com); TCEC will admit AI-coded engines to its 30th season through the Swiss only, with a separate gauntlet rather than league eligibility (Chessdom).
• Midway and finish lines abroad: English teams lead both European Senior sections, Andrew Hong made his third straight draw at Linares, and the Kanizsa Open has its winner's report. At Hersonissos after five rounds, England 1 and Italy share the 50+ lead on 9/10 with England ahead on game points, and England 1 and Slovenia share the 65+ lead — Slovenia holding the head-to-head win, England's Peter Large on a perfect 4/4 and John Nunn on top board (ChessBase, European Chess Union); note the two sources disagree on the event's span — the ECU says August 26–September 5, ChessBase August 27–September 4, and TWIC's report sides with ChessBase. Hong held Frederik Svane (2655) today, his third consecutive draw against 2630-plus opposition for Granada, with the Spanish Primera División closing tomorrow (Americans in Action section); Shamsiddin Vokhidov beat Yuriy Kuzubov in the same round (Elite Events section). And ChessBase's Kanizsa report confirms Pranesh M as winner on 7/9, unbeaten, ahead of Or Bronstein on tiebreak — with top seed Matthias Bluebaum's 27-point rating bleed across Dortmund and Kanizsa now visible on the September list (ChessBase).
• US-soil and grassroots: Glendale opens Friday, and a nine-year-old Philadelphian is the week's best outreach story. The Southern California Open runs September 4–7 at the Glendale Hilton with a $60,000 guaranteed fund, more than 300 players expected and 11 GMs including Christopher Yoo and GM-elect Liam Putnam, after Aronian's free simul at the Center for Armenian Arts on August 28 (Hoodline, Los Angeles Daily News). Tanya Sinha, 9, winner of the Pennsylvania state girls' title after the 2025 Philadelphia girls' tournament, is teaching preschoolers at her old school and drew four-outlet coverage — ready-made social material (cbsnews.com, Northeast Times). IEEE Spectrum profiles a New Jersey teen whose bake sales have funded six US Chess memberships for Native American students who couldn't afford tournament play (IEEE Spectrum); the Coppell Chess Club, 500-plus members, opened a Frisco, Texas branch (Community Impact). One federation action item: FIDE opened registration for the World Cadet Championships in Batumi, November 21–29 — a new 48-player invited round-robin format across six U8/U10/U12 categories, with free full board for invitees and a hard federation registration deadline of October 12 (FIDE). Among 54 newly rated US events in 19 states, the 71st Iowa Open led at 129 players (event). [RESPONSE?]
Coverage note: the FIDE player-list feed failed, so this edition may be missing that data; one story candidate was suppressed as a repeat; chess.com events and untiered personal Lichess relays are not covered, which is why the week's online results reach us through TWIC and chess.com's own pages.
