Essays of Otto for March 7, 2021 - The Accident: On Becoming a Gaming Family
Are you a video-gaming family?
Now, more importantly, did you ever really decide that you would be? Or did it just sort of... happen?
Most importantly: Is there any way you can think of that you might have avoided this? I mean, realistically?
That's the thing. So many of what look like "choices" by parents are, these days, more like acknowledgements of reality with maybe a little desperate harm-reduction modulation thrown in.
Earthworms turn instinctively away from bright light, exhausted parents who just want a few minutes of peace say "okay, I guess," and before you know it you are raising a basement-dwelling neckbeard, or at least it feels that way.
This week's essay is about how we got from our initial plan of not allowing video games in our house to our kids logging at least 10 hours of Roblox a week. Enjoy: https://essaysofotto.blogspot.com/2021/03/the-accident-on-becoming-gaming-family.html
