I’m sure this will seem utterly paranoid and out of left field, but—as a one-time member of the ranks of government officials—lately I’ve been thinking about the risks faced by such people.

Before getting around to a sort of movie review, this essay considers why, back when I was The Man or at least one of The Men, I kept a three-foot piece of sharpened wood next to my desk and just exactly what was in my top desk drawer.
