Birdwatching (Again, For Real This Time)
On appreciating the little things.
The four of us were standing there, binoculars out, locked in. Of course, a group so singularly focused drew the attention of another person, eager to see for themselves whatever it was that had us all apparently enraptured.
It’s a robin, K. said. The guy was polite, though his disappointment was palpable.
Oh neat. Then, less cheerfully, They’re everywhere today.
Later, we were laughing at what a letdown it’d been. That we should’ve apologized for leading him astray. What he must’ve thought of us, all staring at this utterly common thing.
You know though, A. said—the only expert among us, the one who could follow a bird just by its call—I think it’s a good for you to live like everything is beautiful.
