Good morning, Emmett. Here's what happened around town this week.

SCHOOLS

Engineers say Emmett High School's dome buildings are not an immediate safety threat, but they do need major work. A team of 10 experts used visual inspections, X-rays and radar scans and found widespread wear, including cracks, moisture seepage and aging systems. A conceptual estimate puts the needed repairs at about $24 million. The district has not announced a final repair plan, funding source or timeline.

COMMUNITY

The Idaho Youth Sports Commission and Emmett School District delivered free shoes to students who need them through the Sneakers for Kids program. The effort is meant to ease some of the costs families face and help students stay active.

The city approved a downtown road closure for Saturday's Emmett on Main Street party. Staff recommended closing the streets from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the party itself runs from 5 to 10 p.m. and will include a car show, live music, food and drinks, and a free children's movie. The plan has been shared with the Idaho Transportation Department, with final state paperwork still being completed.

SPORTS

Emmett opened the football season with a 55-0 win at Moscow. Eli Brennan threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns and added 74 rushing yards, while Ryder Leonard ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Emmett was listed at 1-0 and was scheduled to host Preston on Friday, Aug. 28.

The girls soccer team beat Nampa 3-1 on Aug. 25 after opening the season with a 1-1 tie at Columbia. The volleyball team also started with 3-0 wins over Mountain Home on Aug. 24 and Vision on Aug. 26. No individual player statistics were posted for those matches.

Emmett senior Jax Banuelos received a Division I football offer from Idaho State after returning from a serious leg injury that kept him out for much of last season.
