CITY & COUNTY

The Emmett City Council’s August meeting brought several practical changes. The council approved a 4% increase in garbage rates to help cover higher disposal costs, approved 2027 Dodge Durango police vehicles at $40,341 each, and awarded a $33,951.50 contract to replace a water-distribution pump. It also moved $25,000 to equipment and $60,000 to capital projects from fiber-utility savings. A public hearing was continued to Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m.; the meeting record did not identify the subject in the accessible summary.

SCHOOLS

Emmett High School’s landmark domes are getting a closer look after engineers found concrete cracks, moisture behind the outer covering and a high water table near the foundation. The district has used sonar and X-rays, installed crack monitors and hired surveyors to watch for movement. The district’s public calendar lists a special school board meeting at the high school on Aug. 17, but no agenda or decision was visible when checked, so there is still no verified repair plan, cost, funding source or timeline to report.

Emmett schools have also started the state-required 60-second moment of silence. It happens after the tardy bell and before morning announcements, with a second bell signaling that announcements can begin. The district said it notified families through ParentSquare, email and Facebook.

At its Aug. 10 meeting, the school board reviewed a one-time capital allocation from HB 05/21 and listed facility projects, including a possible new gym, among its priorities. Trustees also approved updates involving student discipline, online conduct and weapons on campus, along with staffing changes and routine bills.

COMMUNITY

Emmett on Main is planned for Saturday, Aug. 29, from 5 to 10 p.m. in historic downtown. The free event will include a classic-car show, live music from High Country, local food and drinks, shopping and other entertainment; registration is free but not required.

SPORTS

There were no verified summer-ball or youth-tournament results to report. Fall sports are now starting: MaxPreps lists Emmett football at Moscow on Friday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m., and girls soccer at Columbia the same day at 6 p.m.; the girls are listed at home against Nampa on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. Detailed results will be added when official scores are available.
