Good morning, Emmett. Here's what happened around town this week.

CITY & COUNTY

Gem County commissioners will take another look at a proposed gravel pit northeast of Emmett after hearing an appeal this week. Premier Spring Creek South was approved by the county Planning and Zoning Commission in January, but the project was later reduced from 223 acres to about 61 acres after comments from neighbors, Idaho Fish and Game and other agencies. The site is about five miles from town near Spring Creek Road and State Highway 52.

Opponents told commissioners the permit did not adequately address required findings about traffic, nearby property and the future development of vacant land. They also argued that conditions cannot substitute for the evidence needed to approve the project. Premier Aggregates defended the approval, pointing to 33 conditions, road improvements and its argument that the pit would replace an existing source rather than create new transportation impacts. Commissioners are scheduled to deliberate the appeal Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Gem County Annex.

QUICK NOTES

The Gem County Mosquito Abatement District announced Aug. 11 that a location in the county tested positive for West Nile virus. The public announcement available this week did not identify the site or provide additional testing details, so there is no verified information to add about the location.
