Good morning, Emmett. Here's what happened around town this week.

CITY & COUNTY

The Emmett City Council has not decided on the proposed Riverbend Place subdivision yet. At its July 28 meeting, the council continued the public hearing until Aug. 11 after members said they needed more time to review more than 200 pages of material submitted before the meeting. Apex Land Group LLC is proposing 96 lots on about 10 acres along East 12th Street — 92 single-family townhouse lots and four common lots — plus annexation of 1.5 acres for multifamily zoning. The council asked for more review of drainage, traffic, infrastructure capacity, emergency response and school impacts. Nearby residents also raised concerns about East 12th Street traffic, the timing of Foxfire Lane construction, a possible traffic signal at East 12th and Substation Road, and drainage issues tied to the neighboring Dagger Falls development. The council voted unanimously to continue the hearing.

SCHOOLS

Emmett’s virtual school has a new name and a bigger target for the coming year. Idaho Education News reports that the district rebranded it as Virtual Prep Academy of Idaho to reflect its online, hybrid and home-learning pathways. The program ended last school year with about 135 students and plans to open with about 150 this fall, most of them from Gem County.

The district is also working through how to apply Idaho’s new K-12 artificial-intelligence law. Superintendent Craig Woods said Emmett is waiting for the state framework before finalizing its approach. Separately, the district has a goal of reducing student screen time by 25% across its buildings this school year, while leaders have discussed — but not formally adopted — going as high as 50%. The plan would vary by grade and class, and online courses would still require screen time.

Payette River Regional Technical Academy, an Emmett-based charter school, received more than $966,000 in early state funding this month as it expands full-time enrollment. The school estimates a 61% increase in funding units for the coming year and plans to add about 75 freshmen to the 100 sophomores continuing full time.

COMMUNITY

A newly formed Gem County Aquatic Center Advisory Board is starting a community conversation about an indoor aquatic center. The group is exploring a possible site on school-district property north of Butte View, with ideas that include a pool, a walking track, showers and aerobics space. Mayor Gordon Petrie said the city has no money in its current budget for a full schematic plan, and organizers said they are still trying to build partnerships and determine whether residents would support paying for a facility through taxes. No final location, design or funding plan has been approved.

The Gem County Fair also put a local spotlight on the next generation of agricultural students. Recent Emmett graduates Hayden Wingett, Cayden Cronquist and Paxton Hovley told KIVI that 4-H and FFA taught them responsibility, budgeting, animal care and confidence. Wingett plans to attend Howard College in Texas, while Cronquist and Hovley plan to attend South Plains College for livestock judging.
