Postkort fra 2042: The Gap in the Canopy

Maja,
They felled the big linden at the Kapelvej gate on Tuesday. Root rot, allegedly. I signed the order myself in March and then forgot about it the way you forget a dentist appointment, and this morning I walked through and the sky was in the wrong place.
The canopy layer still shows it. I checked. Sixty-one years of tree, a green blob on the municipal shade map with a coverage score of 0.83, flagged pending re-survey — which means for another eleven months I will be planning shade that does not exist. I could file the correction in four minutes. I have not.
It rained while I stood there, that thin warm rain we get in August now, and the new pavement drank all of it instantly, and I thought: nothing here holds anything anymore. Not water. Not trees. Not marriages, though that one is old news and not a complaint.
Tell Freja her drawing is still on my fridge. She has drawn the tree, incidentally. I am not going to tell her.
They plant three replacements in November. Faster-growing species. I will be seventy-nine when they are that big.
A.
