Watch this week
Iran's ceasefire response via Pakistani mediators is positive for risk but NOT a deal yet. Hormuz remains restricted, oil structurally elevated, and PCE at 3.5% locks Fed handcuffs. One headline could un-do all of today's bid.
1. Bitcoin & crypto market
BTC at $76,988 — bid as Iran sent ceasefire response through Pakistani mediators overnight, easing Hormuz fears that drove yesterday's selloff. Daily open near $76,650; reclaim of $77K signals attempted base-build above the line that broke Tuesday.
Spot BTC ETFs printed 3 straight outflow days Apr 27–29 (-$263M, -$89.7M, -$148M). Apr 30 flows pending. April net still +$2.43B. IBIT carried most bleeding but remains top 1% of all ETFs by flows. Cumulative ETF holdings 1.32M BTC (~6.3% of supply).
MegaETH ($MEGA) TGE launched Wednesday at ~$1.7B FDV — listed on Coinbase, Upbit, Bithumb, KuCoin, Huobi HTX. 8,360 airdrop wallets: 50% holding, 40% sold, 10% partial. Network already at $200M TVL processing ~26 TPS. Clean print — beat the over.
DonAlt's read: 'chop is the worst case' near-term — not a flush. Macro-led risk aversion + ETF outflows + lack of new catalyst = exhausting range-bound action. Position for chop, not breakout, until something cracks.
2. Stocks
S&P 500 opens at 7,162, basically flat after April capped its best month since 2020 (+~10.6%). Apple +3% on Q2 earnings beat (iPhone + China strong, raised current Q outlook). Nasdaq edged higher; Dow +0.4%.
Apple Q2: revenue + EPS beat; current quarter outlook better than expected. Tariffs and supply chain noise priced in. Mag 7 dispersion narrative resolving — Apple proves the AI capex pushback narrative isn't universal.
Q1 GDP printed 2.0% annualized vs 2.2% expected (slight miss). March PCE 3.5% YoY (highest since spring 2023). Initial jobless claims 189K (lowest since 1969) — labor market low-hire/low-fire mode persists.
Buffett retires at Berkshire annual meeting tomorrow — Greg Abel takes over CEO. End of an era. Watch for tone shift on capital allocation messaging into Sunday's Q&A.
3. Oil & macro
WTI crude $102.45 (-3% at open), Brent $109.95 (-0.4%). Iran sent response through Pakistani mediators to U.S. amendments to draft Hormuz/ceasefire deal. Trump's 60-day war powers deadline halted. Range today $102–$108.
March PCE re-accelerated to 3.5% YoY (highest since spring 2023, up from 2.8% Feb). Core PCE +0.3% MoM, 3.2% YoY. Fed's preferred gauge moving the WRONG way — markets no longer pricing any 2026 cuts.
Fed held at 3.5–3.75% Wednesday with 4 DISSENTS. Powell's term ends May 15 — Vice Chair Jefferson takes over. Hawkish hold given inflation print + oil shock. Daly noted oil shock means 'getting inflation down takes longer.'
4. Gold
Gold $4,571/oz (-1.1%) as Iran ceasefire response eases Hormuz risk premium and dollar firms post-PCE hawkish read. Pulling back from this week's $4,650 resistance test — first real cooldown after a parabolic April.
Levels: $4,580 immediate support, then $4,500. Resistance unchanged at $4,650 — a clean break opens $4,750. Today's pullback is healthy after the run; structural uptrend intact above $4,500.
Setup intact: real yields fading, inflation sticky, Fed handcuffed, geopolitical premium oscillating. The trade only fully breaks on Hormuz de-escalation + dovish Fed pivot — a confirmed Iran deal would be the first leg of that.
5. Altcoins & memecoins
MegaETH ($MEGA) live on Coinbase + Upbit + Bithumb at $1.7B FDV. Strong holder base (50% holding airdrop) + real on-chain activity day one. Watch for follow-through volume; this was the most-anticipated L2 launch of the cycle.
Today's unlocks hit: SUI 42.6M tokens (~$40M) for Series B + community + early contributors. OP and TREE also unlocking. SUI down 3.7% pre-unlock + multiple DeFi hacks compounding pressure.
May 8: SXT unlocks ~23% of total supply — single most dilutive event of all of Q2 2026. May 19–20: PYTH unlocks 2.13B tokens (21.3% of supply). Duck these names or accept the dilution.
Polygon (POL) +2.2% after Visa integrated POL into its global stablecoin settlement program (Apr 29). DOGE +3.7% on breakout above $0.10 + short squeeze. XRP -3% to $1.37 as Vegas conference wraps.
6. The big picture today
Iran ceasefire response is the day's risk-on catalyst — but NOT a deal yet. Oil giving back some of yesterday's spike, gold unwinding, BTC bid. If Trump signals acceptance of the response, oil opens $98 and BTC tags $80K. If rejected, we round-trip back to yesterday's pain.
Macro frame unchanged underneath: PCE 3.5%, Fed handcuffed, Powell exiting, Jefferson incoming May 15. Structural ceiling on risk assets is real until inflation cools — today is positioning relief, not regime change.
BTC technicals: $76.5K is the floor that has to hold. Reclaim of $77K → $80K is the bull case. Lose $76K and $74K → $72K opens fast. Bias: trade the range with tight stops, don't chase either side until $80K reclaim or $72K flush.
Playbook: take some risk-on into the Iran response window, but lighten ahead of weekend in case it round-trips. Long gold + long energy still the macro hedge default. Skip the May unlock cluster (SUI today, SXT May 8, APT May 12, STRK May 15, PYTH May 19–20) — wait for setups to come to you.
