Watch this week

Trump signaled fresh military action against Iran overnight to reopen Strait of Hormuz — oil ripped to 4-year highs and BTC dumped through $76.5K. Combined with PCE re-accelerating to 3.5%, the macro backdrop is the most hostile it's been all month. Stay defensive until the Hormuz situation clarifies.

ETF Flows Spot BTC ETFs logged 3rd straight day of outflows Wed (-$148M); 9-day inflow streak ended Mon. April total still +$2.4B; ETFs hold 1.32M BTC (~$101B, 6.3% of supply).

1. Bitcoin & crypto market

BTC at $76,316, down ~1.5% from yesterday's $77,508 close. Daily open was $75,752 — third straight session capped below $77K. Overnight selloff driven by reports Trump is weighing military action against Iran to reopen Hormuz.

Spot BTC ETFs printed 3 consecutive days of outflows: -$263M (Apr 27), -$89.7M (Apr 28), -$148M (Apr 29). IBIT carried most of the bleeding. April net total still +$2.43B; cumulative ETF holdings 1.32M BTC (6.3% of supply).

Coindesk reports Robinhood (HOOD) and Coinbase (COIN) led a sharp crypto-stock rout yesterday after Trump rejected the Iran peace plan. HOOD missed Q1 earnings — crypto trading fees fell 47% QoQ. Retail volume is officially dead.

MegaETH TGE confirmed for today — one of the most anticipated L2 launches of the cycle. Polymarket pricing 97.4% YES on the on-time launch. Watch for liquidity rotation if the ticker prints clean.

2. Stocks

S&P 500 at 7,168 (+0.46% open) — fresh ATH intraday. Dow ripping +1.49% to 49,588 on Caterpillar +10% (revenue beat + raised guide), Alphabet +10% (Q1 beat), Qualcomm +16% (Q2 beat), Eli Lilly +7% (raised full-year sales to $82–85B).

Mag 7 dispersion the real story: Meta -7% on capex shock + weak user growth; Microsoft -4% on similar AI spending concerns. Tech is the only S&P sector RED today. The 'all AI all the time' trade is cracking under earnings reality.

Q1 GDP printed 2.0% annualized vs 2.2% expected — slight miss, but still big jump from 0.5% prior quarter. Initial jobless claims 189K — lowest reading since September 1969. Labor market remains in low-hire, low-fire mode.

Today's flow: Caterpillar's industrial bellwether read + AI capex pushback in Mag 7 = real economy outperforming AI hype. Watch this rotation widen if PCE keeps the Fed on hold.

3. Oil & macro

WTI rips to $107.94/bbl (+3.9% at open), Brent above $115. Catalysts: Trump weighing fresh strikes on Iran + reports UAE exiting OPEC adds another supply shock on top of ongoing Hormuz disruption. Range today $103–$110.90.

March PCE inflation re-accelerated to 3.5% YoY (highest since spring 2023, up from 2.8% February). Core PCE +0.3% MoM, 3.2% YoY. The Fed's preferred gauge is moving the WRONG way. Cuts off the table near-term.

Fed held at 3.5–3.75% Wednesday with 4 DISSENTS — Miran wanted a cut; Hammack, Kashkari, Logan wanted no cut. Powell's likely final meeting before leadership transition. Tone was hawkish given the inflation print.

4. Gold

Gold ripping to $4,628/oz (+1.6%) as the trifecta of Iran tensions, PCE re-acceleration, and structural Fed handcuffs continues to support the bid. Up massively YTD; structural breakout regime fully intact.

Levels: $4,650 immediate resistance — clean break opens $4,750. Support at $4,580 then the Tuesday low near $4,500. Watch dollar reaction post-PCE — DXY weakness adds fuel.

Macro setup is textbook gold: real yields fading, inflation sticky, geopolitical premium expanding. Only thing that breaks the trade is Hormuz de-escalation + dovish Fed pivot — neither looks imminent.

5. Altcoins & memecoins

MegaETH TGE today — Polymarket implied probability of on-time launch sits at 97.4%. High-profile launch with serious VC backing. Liquidity will rotate into the print; watch for rug-of-air type moves on day one.

May 1 (tomorrow): SUI unlocks 42.62M tokens (~$40.4M) for Series B investors + community reserve + early contributors. OP and TREE also unlock this week. Supply pressure building into early May.

May 8: SXT (Space and Time) unlocks ~23% of total supply — the single most dilutive event of all of Q2 2026. May 19–20: PYTH unlocks 2.13B tokens (21.3% of supply). Duck these names or accept the dilution.

Coinbase listed Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL) for spot trading yesterday. Polymarket filed with CFTC to bring main exchange onshore — meaningful regulatory progress for prediction markets.

6. The big picture today

Macro backdrop has gone from neutral to actively hostile: oil > $107, PCE 3.5%, Fed hawkishly handcuffed, geopolitical risk acute. Risk-on rallies are the exception, not the trend. Default position is short until something changes.

BTC technicals: $76.3K floor is the line in the sand. Lose it and $74K → $72K open up fast. Bulls need a reclaim of $80K to flip the script — looks unlikely without a Hormuz de-escalation OR a dovish Powell pivot.

Equity dispersion is the trade: industrials and healthcare (CAT, LLY) ripping while AI capex names (META, MSFT) get hit. Suggests growth rotation is starting beneath the surface even as headline indices grind higher.

Playbook: defensive bias. Long gold + energy as macro hedge. Avoid leveraged BTC longs until $80K reclaim or capitulation flush sub-$72K. Skip altcoin unlocks (SXT, PYTH, APT, STRK). Wait for setup, don't force it.
