Summer is gradually coming to an end as we soon enter the middle of “Manageable heat” (処暑 Shosho) division: “Heat starts to die down” (天地始粛 Tenchi hajimete samushi). Out of the 72 microseasons this will be the 41st, which starts on Friday August 28th.

In this end of Summer update we’ll look at the newest addition to the Dunbar Design Repository which is an article by Florian Hardwig, “On Condensed Geometric Sans Serifs”. There are CJ Type exhibitions coming up in Tokyo and New York and I was interviewed for the Vast podcast. Finally you can see Louvette Pixel used for some wonderfully glitchy visuals for DJ event Nokia City.

An Article About Condensed Geometric Sans Serifs
↑ Dunbar Low Condensed Light and Text Condensed Regular

This article looks at Condensed Geometric Sans Serifs and their development from the early 20th Century through contemporary variable fonts like Dunbar. It examines the utility of adding narrower widths to a typeface and the challenges of doing so in the case of a geometric sans design with a range of designs and approaches over the last century.

Vast Lives Podcast Interview with CJ Dunn
↑ Dunbar Low Compressed Bold

I was interviewed for the Vast Lives podcast where we talked about growing up in Hawaiʻi, the architectural lettering I learned from my dad, and the skateboarding demo I saw with Christian Hosoi and Mark Gonzales when I was a kid. We also talk about how I got in to typeface design and why a well trained eye is still the most important design tool. Check out the interview here
